From BabsFayth at aol.com Thu Sep 4 15:52:41 2003 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Thu Sep 4 14:55:49 2003 Subject: [Scottish News] SCOTTISH NEWS IN MINNESOTA Vol. 3, No. 24, September 04, 2003 Message-ID: <44.34bf2795.2c88e3f9@aol.com> Hello Everyone WOW! Did you see that number! 24! The completion of 2 full years of the SNIM! Thank you all for being loyal readers, supporters, and contributors. No, it sure doesn?t seem like 2 years. But, you know what they say. . . Time flies, etc., etc., etc. Everybody has their own devices to mark the passage of events, in this case, the end of summer: Labor Day, last day of the State Fair, kids go back to school, that first bright red/orange leaf on the neighborhood maple tree. For me it ?s that moment when I pull up to the intersection of 65th and Lyndale in Richfield and realize that the vegetable stand that has beckoned me from the K-Mart parking lot for six weeks is GONE! No more can I look forward to those crisp, sweet, juicy ears of corn from Sever?s in Eden Prairie complementing my dinner. That?s it, I don?t care what the calendar says, summer is over. And so, on to fall and all the wonderful events that are planned. We hope you will be excited by these offerings and will support our wonderful Scottish community. If you are new to all of this, don?t be shy. You will find this a very welcoming and convivial community. A slight change in format as we end our second year. We are going to list events, both Coming and Future by placing the date of the event first. We hope this meets with your approval and makes it easier for you to add events to your personal calendar. NEWS Minnesota Pipes offers end of season review by Sally Gordon Pipe and drum corps work all year honing and improving performance skills, and summer is the time when bands are particularly visible. As summer 2003 begins to slow down, Minnesota Pipes and Drums looks back on a very successful and fun season of competition and performance. Our competition season ended at the August 23rd Quad Cities Celtic Highland Games in Davenport, Iowa with a win and Best Bass Section award for Grade 4 and a second place for Grade 5. The cheers were loud and heartfelt at Davenport when the Twin Cities own Andrew Hoag received the Piper of the Day award for his outstanding Grade 1 performances. Other season highlights for MPD include second place finishes for Grades 4 and 5 at the Macalester College games and a second place for Grade 4 at the Springfield Highland Games. We welcomed first-time band competitors Debra Beck, Kim Darke, Marcia Franklin, Tom Hinrichsen, Emelia Mickman, Nicola Nickolov, Tommy Nolan, Janet Waack and Bill Zadra to our ranks and are very proud of our solo piping and drumming medal winners Andi Dierich, Jennifer Fraser, Joe Hawthorne, Joe Hickey, Tom Hinrichsen, Dick Langer, Mark Lucas, Tommy Nolan, Owen Sehon, Janet Waack and Merlin Zimmerman. While competition is a big part of what we do, we also keep busy with community service performances, parades and concerts. This year our community service activities included the Race for the Cure, the Relay for Life, the LEMA 911 memorial service at the Metrodome and Loyalty Day at the State Veterans Home. Along with the usual spate of summer parades, MPD provided concert entertainment at the Como Park Pavilion, Lake Harriet Band Shell, Rosemount Band Shell and Central Presbyterian Church in St Paul. Thanks to all of you who supported us during the year and we?re looking forward to an equally exciting 2004.
