Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators (today they would be called terrorists) in the attempted plot to blow up the House of Parliament on November 5, 1605 protesting James I dealings with English Catholics, was caught guarding the gunpowder in a hiding place under the House of Lords. He was tortured and executed. These days, November 5th is known as Guy Fawkes Day (or Bonfire Night) in Britain. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes in bonfires. Some of the English have been to known to wonder if they are celebrating Fawkes execution or honoring his attempt to do away with the government. For more information about this curious piece if British history, type ?Guy Fawkes Day? into your browser and see what comes up, including sites like this: http://www.bonefire.org/guy/ COMING EVENTS - For details scroll down the page November 9, 2003, Sunday, 1 to 5 pm, A SPECIAL DAY OF SUPPORT for the MINNESOTA FOLK FESTIVAL November 9, 2003, Sunday, St. Andrew?s Society sponsors Kirkin? of the Tartan at Calvary Episcopal Church, 4:00 p.m. Church is at the corner of 2nd Ave and 2nd Street SW in Rochester (right across the street from the Mayo Clinic). Scots at the St. Paul Curling Club Clan Donald and the St. Andrew's Society are sponsoring an "Evening on the Ice". I know you may say.......Ice? Why would anyone want to encourage cold winter weather? Actually this activity is going to be indoors. Have you ever seen people play this ancient Scottish sport called Curling? I'm sure, most of you have at least heard of it. It is structured rather like shuffleboard, only on ice, and with some rather large stones. The St. Paul Curling Club is a fine facility on Selby Avenue between Dale and Western Avenues. Currently the Curling Club has over 800 members and costs $240.00 annually. It is obviously a very professional and successful venture. As guests of the St. Paul Curling Club, we are fortunate to have this opportunity to try it out. The event will be held on: Saturday, November 22nd, starting at 5:30 p.m. and continue past 8:30 p.m., (stay longer if you like.) Admission for the event is $10.00, which includes food and beverages. An entree' of "sloppy joes", calico beans, cole slaw, pickles and chips, served buffet style. Soda pop is included. People will be encouraged to bring desserts to share with others. Beer is available for purchase. People can bring stronger beverages if desired. Ice fees are $15.00, for those who would like to get out on the ice and curl. (This is a special reduced rate for our group.) Two Clan Donald members will show us around the ice. Bill Grohs is a member of the Curling Club, and Kyle McKeever is an award winning curler. Both have agreed to teach us what they can about the sport, and give is a good start. For those in the audience, there is a marvelous 2nd floor gallery with large windows that look out over the ice, so you can monitor the curling activity. While watching from the gallery, you can comfortably eat and visit with friends. No street shoes are allowed on the ice. It is recommended that tennis shoes will probably work best. All will be asked to use the shoe cleaners next to the doors that lead out to the ice. Brooms and "sliders" are provided by the club. The temperature on the ice is about 45 deg F, so you may want to wear an extra pair of sox, warms pants (maybe even long underwear), a light jacket and gloves. We hope to see lots of youngsters, teenagers, and young adults; bring the whole family. Please let us know if you can come, and how many will be included in your party. Call in your reservations to John McKeen @ jemckeen@isd.net (651) 228-002 2 (leave a message), or Bob McOlsson at olssonr@katewwdb.com (651) 770-5820 (leave a message). Directions: Drive to St. Paul, and take the Dale Street exit. Head South five blocks to Selby Avenue, turn left, and head East 2 1/2 blocks to the parking lot between O'Hara's Restaurant and the St. Paul Curling Club at 476 Selby Avenue. It will be on your right. The door to the facility is at the back-side of the building. (get a map at www.mapquest.com ) November 22, 2003 ? Molly Quinn?s, beloved watering hole for local Scots (and Irish) closed after the annual Halloween costume party last Friday Night. The Scottish loyalists bade farewell to Molly?s and her erstwhile pubkeeper, Bill Watkins, at a bittersweet gathering on Friday, October 16. Several grand laddies arrived bedecked in their kilts as was himself. We ate hearty from the limited menu and drank the sweet offerings from the bar. Hidden amongst the pick-up band members was a Scot who could play a wee bit of Flower of Scotland and a couple of other Scots tunes on those under-the-arm pipes. As the evening galloped to a close, we all joined hands ?round the table and sang Auld Lang Synge with himself leading us out in his strong baritone. Bill says while he remains committed to the idea that Molly?s will rise again, (like a Phoenix?) his partners are not as interested. Stay tuned. As ABonnyScot remarked, ?Where will we go now?? If there is to be another Molly?s we? ll have it here, in the SNIM. In the meanwhile, dear Liam, thanks for all the good times, the many, many laughs, the warm welcome you always had for us, and for taking such an important role in our community. This report from Sally Gordon: October 7th was the date the band's Annual General Meeting. Board members reviewed a successful year of performance and growth and thanked the membership for making it all happen. The most notable event at this year's Annual General Meeting was the election of officers. Klaus Hinrichsen joined John Saucke, Sally Gordon and John Gibbs on the Board. Klaus was elected to a 3-year term to replace Vicky Munro whose term had ended. Many thanks go to Vicky for all her hard work. Merlin Zimmerman was re-elected to the position of Drum Sergeant/Vice President for his second 3-year term. Dr. Michael (Mick) McCoy was elected for a 3-year term to the position of Pipe Major/President replacing Bob Lies who chose not to run for re-election. Bob has this to say about his decision not to seek re-election: "I accomplished most of what I set out to accomplish with the band, and am pleased to turn over a vibrant and healthy organization to the new Pipe Major. I think Mick's musical vision for the band will bring good things to the group and its performers. I look forward to supporting the band and the new leadership in any way I can." And in closing A wee tale for the All Hallows? eve/Guy Fawkes Day celebration: From a book titled: "Scottish Ghosts". Sent in by Frank Campbell and J. Scott Cameron ? descendants of Tiree. The Black Dog of Tiree Humans are not the only creatures to return in ghostly form after death. There are plenty of spectral animals to be seen around Scotland, especially dogs. The hounds that howl by the ruins of Buckholme Tower in the borders inspire fear in those who hear them. Another phantom dog has been heard crashing against a bedroom door in Ballechin House in Perthshire. Tiree has yet another canine ghost. Tiree is a beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland, blessed with long stretches of silvery sand around its shores. On and around one such beach on the northern side of the island a ghostly dog has been seen and heard several times. The dog is large and black and usually makes itself heard first with a strange, hollow-sounding bark. It will follow people along the beach for quite some distance before it disappears into thin air.
