From BabsFayth at aol.com Wed Feb 4 01:00:25 2004 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Wed Feb 4 01:11:37 2004 Subject: [Scottish News] EXTRA! EXTRA! Scottish News in Minnesota Message-ID: <31.438c0941.2d51e479@aol.com> Hello Everyone Several things have come up in the last couple of days to warrant this EXTRA! edition. FIRST - CAN YOU GO TO SCOTLAND TOMORROW???? Or one day in the next couple of weeks??? Hobbit Travel has a hot deal to warm your cold Scottish bones. Two people traveling together, purchase your tickets BEFORE February 16 and COMPLETE your travel by February 29, and your round trip tickets to Glasgow on IcelandAir will cost $206 each. You can't fly to Chicago for that little amount of money. This is surely an offer to appeal to all Scottish hearts. The catch, of course, is that you practically have to have your suitcase packed before you open this email. So, if this interest you at all, call Kim at Hobbit Travel, 612-332-3332. SECOND - THERE IS A MISTAKE IN THE DIRECTIONS TO OLIVET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH 5. February 6, 2004 - Friday, The Return to Eilean Dubh Concert, Olivet Congregational Church, 7:30 p.m. The Return to Eilean Dubh is a winter's night concert to warm you with the kind of "ceilidh" that a small Scottish island community might throw for themselves, complete with music, dancing, and a feast of Scottish savories. Traditional Celtic band Dunquin, guest artist Laura MacKenzie, and the RSCDS present old and new Scottish music and dance. Olivet Congregational Church, 1850 Iglehart Ave, St. Paul - one block north of Marshall Ave and one block WEST of Fairview Ave. Pay at the door, $10, No advance tickets. For additional information call 651-644-4779. AND Hot of the presses, the second Scottish Island Novel, the sequel to Westering Home, The White Rose of Scotland, will be available for purchase and signing. "The correction of course is the church is one block WEST of Fairview not east as previously reported. THIRD - PROPER PROTOCOL FOR THE VISIT OF THE LORD LYON. Thanks to Steve Kincaid and his Canadian chum James Brisbin, we can all be prepared to properly address and approach the Lord Lyon during his visit here on February 22 and 23. 1. When introducing Mr. Blair, he should be referred to as ?His Honour, Mr. Robin Blair, Lord Lyon - King of Arms? as he is a judge of a High Court. 2. When speaking to him one should address him as ?Your Honour? initially and afterwards as ?Mr. Blair?. 3. As the Lord Lyon embodies the presence of the Queen in his official capacity, one should not reach out to shake hands with him but rather wait for him to initiate such familiarity. This would be the custom in Britain among those ?in the know? but, as he is visiting the ?colonies?, a breach of this etiquette would likely not be considered an attack on the Queen. We have no way of know how staunchly "his Honour" will stand on ceremony, but if we all know the proper protocol we won't come off acting like a bunch of rubes from "fly over country." Brits learn this behavior while babes in arms, so don't feel you will have to fall on your sword if you make a boo boo. Just do your best. Suck it up and be dignified. There will probably be another EXTRA! edition when we have all the details about the Sunday brunch at Rush Creek, etc. Yes, I am thinking Scottish attire is always appropriate. Arrives in the Twin Cities on Saturday evening, February 21, lodging at the St. Paul Hotel. Sunday morning: Mr. Blair has agreed to participate in the Kirkin' o' the Tartans presented by St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota during two services, 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Avenue in St. Paul. This is a very rare opportunity for all of us. Mr. Blair has witnessed a Kirkin' on one other occasion but has never taken part in this service before. He will be the third speaker and will call the loyal clans of Scotland to bring their tartans forward to be blessed. YOU WILL WANT TO BE PRESENT FOR THAT. (In addition to your piece of tartan that you may want to place on the tray, bring your tartan banner flags if you have them for the procession and recession and assemble at the rear of the church in the entryway. Scottish attire? By all means! WOW! What a sight for Mr. Blair to take back with him to Scotland!) House of Hope will hold a reception between services and we suggest that if you were planning to attend the 11:00 a.m. service you arrive about 10:00 a.m. as Mr. Blair will be departing immediately following the Kirkin' for the noon brunch at Rush Creek and not staying for the reception following the 11:00 a.m. service. As an extra added attraction, it happens to be Macalester College Sunday at House of Hope. The brunch at Rush Creek Golf Course will begin (for our group) in the pub at noon. Brunch prices $18.95 for adults, $14.95 for seniors, $9.95 for children ages 6 - 12 and children 5 and under are free. In addition, St. Andrew's Society is asking for a $5 donation from each guest to help defray the costs of the Lord Lyon's visit. Then on Monday evening, back at House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Avenue in St. Paul in the parlor, a gathering will be held for the Lord Lyon during which time he will give a talk on Heraldry & the Scottish Clans in Modern Times. Savories, sweets, and tea will be served. PLEASE for this event, we need an idea of how many may attend, so chairs and cups can be put out or the event moved to the undercroft, a larger space. Call Mary McShannock and let her know if you plan to attend - 651-778-0427. Again, a $5 donation is being asked to help cover costs. A review of protocol: 1. Also, please -- the Rampant Lion flag is the Monarch's Standard and is not appropriate to fly without permission and unless the Monarch is present. (She can't come.) Do not embarrass yourself or our community by bringing or displaying the Rampant Lion Flag at these events with the Lord Lyon. He is the representative of the Monarch. A final comment: If you have had more than 50 birthdays there is a pretty good chance that you will not have another opportunity to visit with the Lord Lyon in Minnesota. If you have had fewer than 50 birthdays, well, there is always a chance he will come again, but don't count on it -- look how long we waited this time. What I am saying is this: do not miss this rare occasion to visit with and see the Lord Lyon up close and personal. We have one of the most dynamic, supportive, exciting, and connected Scottish communities anywhere in the United States. Let us show this important visitor how committed Minnesotans of Scottish descent are to their heritage. Lets turn out the clans folks by the numbers. Please feel free to forward this message to whomever you think would be interested in these events. We have a very exciting weekend to look forward to. I sincerely hope you will join us at one or all of these events. All the Best Barbara Humphrey Babs -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In my haste to distribute the information yesterday I left out two very important pieces of information. First, the location of Rush Creek Golf Course for those of you who have never been there: Rush Creek is located at 7801 County Rd 101 in Maple Grove. (www.mapquest.com )Approximately 5 miles west of 494 on Bass Lake Rd (Cnty 10) to 101. North on 101 approximately ? mile. Rush Creek is on the left. And secondly, and we are indebted to Mike McClellan for finding this omission, the event on Monday evening at House of Hope church is at 7:15 p.m. Should you have any questions at all about any of the events, please do not hestitate to email me at babsfayth@aol.com or to make your reservation for Monday night you can email Mary McShannock president of St. Andrew's Society at macsenach@comcast.net We are looking forward to huge crowds of tartan bedecked Scots at all these events. Hopefully you will be among them.(Don't let your lack of tartan keep you at home. With or without tartan you will be welcomed.) Mr. Blair will be present and will participate in the Kirkin' o' the Tartans at House of Hope Presbyterian Church tomorrow, Sunday, February 22, services at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Mr. Blair will leave immediately following the Kirkin' in the 11:00 a.m. service for the brunch scheduled at Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove - approximately 4 miles west of 494 on Bass Lake Road (County Road 10) to Highway 101, north approximately 1/4 mile, the club is on the left. The brunch will begin at noon following which Mr. Blair will speak on Heraldry and the Scottish Clans in Modern times. We will return to House of Hope Presbyterian Church at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, February 23 for an informal gathering during which time Mr. Blair will once again talk about his role with the Lord Lyon Court. We can not overemphasize the importance of this visit and urge you to "drop everything" and attend one or more of these events. Questions can be directed to Mary McShannock, president of St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota who are the hosts of Mr. Blair's visit. She would like to have an idea of how many members of our community will attend the brunch and the gathering on Monday night so appropriate arrangements can be made. Email her at: macsenach@yahoo.com Questions can also be directed to me at babsfayth@aol.com This is the most important and significant event that will occur in the Scotti sh community this year. We will not likely have such a distinguished personage visit us again for a long, long time. If you are there, you will have first hand memories, not second hand. BTW - Do not bring your tartans banner flags to the Kirkin tomorrow morning as the church has decided to eliminate our part in the procession, perhaps altogether. So, Tartan Banner flags must stay at home. Sorry. A couple of good web sites for information about the Lord Lyon: http://www.burkes-peerage.net/sites/common/sitepages/page13g-oct.asp http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/ll_homeTemplate.jsp;jsessionid=A061AFF4E8 267A61184416581277CBF9?p_service=Content.show&pContentID=220&p_applic=CCC& Hope to see throngs of you there All the Best, Barbara Humphrey Babs -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
