From BabsFayth at aol.com Thu Apr 1 15:02:33 2004 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Thu Apr 1 15:04:19 2004 Subject: [Scottish News] SCOTTISH NEWS IN MINNESOTA Vol. 4, No. 31, April 1, 2004 Message-ID: <6b.25dd06fd.2d9dcf59@aol.com> Hello Everyone Hurray! It?s Huntigowk! The first of April is generally known as Huntigowk in Scotland and ranks amongst the most joyous of days in the juvenile calendar. It is a day when people try to catch each other by telling lies and playing jokes on each other up until noon. The name is believed to come from an old trick where a person is sent out with a message: Dinna laugh, an' dinna smile But hunt the gowk another mile. The 'gowk' is another name for the cuckoo, which is a silly bird. At each place the message bearer is sent on to someone else. In keeping with the spirit of Huntigowk, I must warn you that there is a severe epidemic of ?Scottish Fever? heading our way. It is due to arrive in Minnesota the morning of April 6. All Scots who discover themselves beset with ? Scottish Fever? are asked to make their way to the Minnesota State Capitol building in St. Paul where devices will be in place to affect an immediate cure. Onward to the Calendar. Plus camping, children's events, food & concessions. Notes on OLD BLIND DOGS - Appearing Saturday and Sunday, May 1st and 2nd, 2004 Minnesota Folk Festival. Since forming in 1990, the Old Blind Dogs have stood on the cutting edge of Scotland's roots revival. The band has developed its own trademark style in which dynamic percussion and bluesy harmonica fuel the delicately phrased melodies of traditional songs, putting the sounds of northeastern Scotland firmly on the world-music map. Old Blind Dogs' founders Jonny Hardie (fiddle) and Buzzby McMillan (bass, cittern) hail from Aberdeenshire on Scotland's northeast coast, an area steeped in traditional songs and fiddle tunes. They have built upon the regions' melodies, incorporating exciting rhythms, with pipes and fiddle tying the music back to its Scottish roots. Vocalist Jim Malcolm is regarded as one of Scotland's finest traditional singers. Originally from Perthshire and Angus, he is also a gifted lyricist, spinning fascinating yarns with his rich, perfectly controlled voice. Rory Campbell's piping skills have become a main attraction in the band, and his exciting original tunes have made substantial contribution to the Old Blind Dogs' repertoire. Raised in central Scotland, Rory is the son of a respected piper and singer from the Isle of Barra. Hailed as one of Scotland's finest young pipers, his pipes and whistle form a feisty partnership with Hardie's fiddle, tying the music back to its Scottish roots. We received the following information from Jackie Johnston that we hope you will give your serious attention: I am currently in talks with the Minnesota Historical Society to write the book on Scots in Minnesota. This is part of their People of Minnesota series. I will need historical photos for the book. Does anyone have any I could use? I have a lot of modern day photos since 1997. I need photos of the early years of your organization, founding members, family gatherings in full Scottish regalia, early Scottish settlers, etc. If you have any photos that I can use, please mail them to Jackie Johnston, 4590 So. Lake Sarah Dr., Maple Plain, MN 55359 or email them to me at jackiejohnston@mchsi.com If at all possible, I would like to have written permission of the photographer. If that is not known and it is an organizational photo or a family historical photo, I would like something in writing giving me permission to use the photo. If you mail originals, I will return them after making copies. I don't know at this time if I will be chosen to write the book. I have been doing research for a book for two years and I heard the MHS was doing this series of books of the nationalities in Minnesota. They have a strict format to follow so at this time, I am not sure if my research is what they will want to use. If it is not, I will follow through with my original plans for a book. In either case, I am still collecting data, stories and photos. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. It is time the people of Minnesota learn about the Scots who settled here and their great influence on our society. CLASSIFIEDS 1. Work out of home office, set your own hours, pay is in the form of personal satisfaction and enthusiastic appreciation. Begin April 7, 2004 or anytime after that depending on availability. Email babsfayth@aol.com As of this writing, no one has come forward willing to take over the Tartan Day Celebration here in Minnesota. Growing over the last 6 years to one of the biggest and most enthusiastic Tartan Day celebrations in the U. S. it would be a tragedy of major proportions if this celebration were not to continue. Several prospective candidates have been approached, but, as yet, no one able to take it on. Given that we are in our 7th year, many of the arrangements are in place and require only phone calls to confirm 2005 plans. From the outside looking in it may seem a daunting task, but it is doable ? maybe by you? BELTANE 1. Celebrate Summer NOW! ? Thanks to Chuck Bushey of Yellowstone Highland Supply for this dissertation on Beltane. There is more, much more. If you are interested, drop me an email and I will send you the entire article. The Celtic traditional arrival of summer is here! Don?t wait until June 21st to celebrate the solstice ? prepare your bonfires and Maypoles now and select your Beltane King and Queen! Lots of friends, food, drink and music are required. Beallthainn is our holiday to celebrate summers arrival. This is a traditional Celtic "Fire Festival" and "Quarter Day" which has also merged with and adopted other ?pagan and Christian? traditions of the final arrival of longer sunny days, green grass, bright flowers, and newborn animals. May 1st, Beallthainn, Fire Festival and Quarter Day In Celtic belief the god Belenos was associated with fertility. Fire was the earthly symbol associated with Belenos so it was thought by many academics that this was the origin of Beallthainn (?Bright Fire?) or the more modern spelling - Beltane. Others dispute this interpretation and believe that it was solely connected with the sun worship of the Druids, a bright fire in honor of the return of the sun and a festival for fertility to encourage the crops to grow and the cattle to thrive. Sun and fire were sacred to the Druids who worshipped the sun by sacrificing animals and humans to this god. They believed in the power of fire to cleanse and to give protection from evil. TARTAN DAY 1. Wrap-up Tartan Day 2004 was the best. We have had larger crowds in the past, especially in 2002 when Tartan Day was on a Saturday, but we have never, never, ever had better weather. What a glorious day! Thanks to everyone who participated both in front of the microphone and on the steps. You were wonderful. We were honored to have our 2nd Annual Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Florence Hart, with us as well as representatives from many organizations, dancers, and the wonderful Macalester Pipe Band. This one will be hard to top, but who knows what next year will bring. Put it on your calendar now: Probable date of the Tartan Day Ball April 2 or 9, the Capitol Celebration April 6, 2005.
