Observed from sun down on October 31st to sundown on November 1st, Samhain revolved around the family and the land. A time of reaffirming ties of friendship and of the final harvest of the year; it is also the period in which the veils between the world that we know and the realm of the dead were thought to be particularly thin and easily passed through. People would welcome the souls of long gone loved ones with a plate at the dinner table, candles in the windows and sweets left outside. To ward of any attacks from unfriendly ghosts they would dress as one of the roaming spirits. Although today's custom of children dressing up and trick or treating is a watered down version of the holiday, for many Samhain is still a deeply spiritual time of year. '"WITCHES" AND CATS PARDONED IN CEREMONY A coven of "witches" executed centuries ago were officially pardoned Sunday in one of the last acts of ancient baronial powers held by a small community in Scotland. The 81 were killed in the 16th and 17th century - when people were condemned to death as witches on as flimsy evidence as owning a black cat or brewing home-made remedies. But this Halloween a gathering at Prestonpans in East Lothian has used ancient feudal powers, due to be abolished the end of November, to pardon the witches - and their cats.
