A Wee bit of Scotland on the Shores of Lake Superior. Skara Brae Scottish Bed & Breakfast Skara Brae Bed & Breakfast overlooks majestic Lake Superior three miles east of Grand Marais Minnesota. Ron Wise and Lyanne Holte-Wise came to Grand Marais from California in the summer of 2003 for Lyanne?s grandfather?s 100th birthday celebration and purchased the bed & breakfast while on vacation. They realized immediately when they visited Skara Brae that this home would be wonderful to share with others. Lyanne had mentioned to Ron on their honeymoon in Scotland in 1999 that she would love to have a Scottish Bed & Breakfast. Three accommodations include The Baird Cottage (Baird is Ron?s ancestral clan), The Stonehaven Room and The Bell Rock Suite. Decorated in the English country style, the B & B is warm, cozy and very restful. Guests can relax in the lakefront living room around the fireplace, at the game table playing a favorite card game or on the decks overlooking the lake. Frequently, evening bonfires are the venue for lively chat, hearty laughter and a wee dram. Sumptuous full breakfasts are served every morning and may include baked French toast, wild rice quiche, vegetable frittata, caramelized bacon, maple sausage, roasted red potatoes, cranachen, poached pears in raspberry coulis and fresh fruit cups when in season. Afternoon tea is served every day with fresh scones, lemon curd, mock Devonshire cream, shortbread and other savories. Ron and Lyanne encourage you to check out the B & B website _www.skarabraebb.com_ (http://www.skarabraebb.com/) to view the accommodations/rates, and to find out about upcoming events, activities, specials and packages. Packages not available on holiday weekends. The B & B is open year round and on holidays. Call 866-467-5272 for more information or reservations. 3. Scottish Songs for hummers on a web site. Woo Hoo. Greetings, here is a website that presents the words for 200 Scottish songs, courtesy Diana Bodnar. For the hummers, it's an opportunity to learn what that favorite tune is all about. This website also opens the door to many interesting Scottish sites. _http://www.rampantscotland.com/songs/blsongs_index.htm_ (http://www.rampantscotland.com/songs/blsongs_index.htm) AND IN CLOSING We made it through the first month. FIRST of all: Twin Cities Scottish Club Burns Night Supper is SOLD OUT! As a matter of fact it is oversold. During our last conversation with Kirsty McCracken, prez of TCSC she proclaimed that she had to stop taking reservations. They had planned on 350 and the numbers were then at 400, so I am guessing she's not even taking a waiting list at this time. HOWEVER! If one of your motives was to hear the Voice Box Ceilidh Band from Helenburgh Scotland, Isobel and Frank (kin of George and the McCracken Clan) there is good news. They will be performing at: Coffee Grounds, January 21, Friday (this one coming up) from 8:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Coffee Grounds is located at 1579 Hamline Avenue, Falcon Heights. Trust _www.mapquest.com_ (http://www.mapquest.com) to get you there. The usual Friday night Ceilidh Dancing that George McCracken and TCSC hosts will meet at Coffee Grounds for this event., This is a great band. If you have not had a chance to enjoy their music at previous appearances in Minnesota, this is your chance. SECONDLY St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota is still taking reservations for their Burns Night Dinner to be held on Saturday Night, January 29 at Rush Creek Gold Club in Maple Grove. This will be a lovely, enjoyable evening. Clan Cameron has been asked to be the honour escort for the Haggis, with the Haggis Speaker Dude, none other than Clan Cameron's own Jack A. Barker delivering the memorable words of the Bard in his own inimitable style. You will find a reservation form on their web site: _www.standrewsmn.org_ (http://www.standrewsmn.org) that includes menu choices, cost is $40 per guest, BUT! do not delay. Reservations are due by this Friday, January 21. Questions email Judith Palmateer _Jpalmateer0463@comcast.net_ (mailto:Jpalmateer0463@comcast.net) or call 651-452-0463. EGG ON MY FACE DEPARTMENT I have just been advised that in order to attend the Burns Night Dinner in Duluth you must be a member of the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association or the Kitchi Gammi Club of Duluth. OOoooppppsss! Well, sorry about that folks. We'll check with the DSHA folks and find out what is up with that??? Guess we have been making a big boo-boo for about 5 years. Have a great time at these events, folks. Don't forget that Scottish attire is welcomed at all times. See you there Babs Barbara Humphrey -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: /pipermail/news_tartandaymn.org/attachments/20050119/ed2a258e/attachment.htm
