From BabsFayth at aol.com Wed Mar 2 15:48:16 2005 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Wed Mar 2 15:50:22 2005 Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 5, No. 42, March 02, 2005 Message-ID: <12b.57e24d64.2f578090@aol.com> Hello Everyone Yup, it?s me. A day late and a dollar short. That seems to be the story of my life. (Yesterday was St. David?s Day, by the way, so special greetings to our Welsh friends, albeit a day late. See previous sentence.) Say, did you notice how that old March 1 Lion tip-toed around Minnesota and let out his roar on the Great Northeastern United States? We are one very lucky bunch of winter survivors. Just beware come March 31, the lion may have lost his way on March 1 only to double back and score at the end of the month. Encourage lambs. Alright, lots going on this month, so let?s get to it. Admission is free. (A Scot?s favorite word.) Call Mike McClellan (612-729-7270) to put your name on the list for reserved seats. Scottish attire is encouraged, and a group get-together at MacVescio?s Italian (ITALIAN???) restaurant on campus is a distinct possibility. (Haggis with marinara sauce?) Theatrical tradition holds that horrendous bad luck will befall the cast and crew putting on a performance of Shakespeare?s Scottish play if the play?s title, M*****h, is mentioned. Puzzled??? Can?t figure it out?? Call me. 8. April 6, 2005 Wednesday, noon 7th Annual Tartan Day Celebration. MN State Capitol in St. Paul Lucky Number SEVEN! Wheeeeee! Here we go! For the seventh year in a row, Scots, Celts, Scottish wannabees from around Minnesota, Twin Cities and the borders of Wisconsin, will gather to celebrate our heritage and the contribution of our ancestors to the history of Minnesota and the United States. JOIN US! This is the place to be on April 6. Yes, we know. It?s a Wednesday and a work day and a school day. Well, have ya not heard of the Scottish Fever? Often afflicts those of Scottish origins early in the morning of April 6 necessitating a quick call to your Scandinavian boss begging off for the day, too overcome with Scottish Fever to sit at your desk all day, eh? As for the wee ones. What a great way to expose them to their heritage. No teacher, Scandinavian or not, could deny such an excellent reason for playing hokey. Help them give a report and their teachers will LOVE you. Gather at the foot of the Mall about 11:45 a.m. to line up for the Parade of Tartans. Look for Shaun Hengel and his son Jake. They will be wearing Douglas and the now familiar blue sash across their chests. At the stroke of noon we will process up the Mall gathering on the steps for our brief program. Bring your Tartan Banner Flags; keep them with you until the Calling of the Clans. Que up behind the microphone, announce your clan, say a few glorious words about your clan, and then place your Tartan Banner flag in the banner stands behind the speakers? microphone. Eric Ferguson of Clann Tartan and Bill Lochen of the 42nd Highlanders have assured us they will do their very best to put together a musket brigade for the firing in the Circle of Honor as they have done the last few years. We are hoping to have the Highland dancers, Royal Scottish Country Dancers, and the pipe bands there as well, God willing. All we need is YOU and the blessings of the weather prognosticators, as we had last year, to make it a perfect day. Questions??? Call me. AND! When it?s all over, those looking for a wee nosh, can join us as we gather at Will Bill Watkin?s new stompin? ground, the Lake Street Garage, 3508 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, 612-729-8820, grab a wee bite, lift a pint and gives thanks for being Scots on this most glorious day of the year. Set your DVR, TIVO, VCR ? what ever it is you set for a trip to Culloden. Great news from Scott McKechnie. Last night, I stumbled across a channel 2 presentation of "Battlefield Britain", a multi-episode series. This particular episode was entitled "Culloden: 1746. The last Jacobite attempt to seize the British crown was also the last pitched battle fought on British soil." For those who might wish to catch this, it will be aired again Thursday, March 24th, at 9PM on tpt2. Perhaps the rest of the Scottish community would like to know of this? And for those with Irish interest as well, "The Boyne: 1690" is showing just ahead of the aforementioned episode, at 8PM. Thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to "get it out there" before it aired again. NEWS 1. Over the mythical seas for an Evening on Eilean Dubh. You know I am an Eilean lass. And so it was with great joy that I sat back, allowed the music and my mind take me to that far off Isle in the Hebrides my ancestors called home, and imagine myself enjoying an evening in the local parish hall. Aye it was grand. The third one of these visits to Eilean Dubh, and word is clearly getting out, as we were in a near SRO situation. Thanks to all who made this magical night happen: Sherry Ladig and Dunquin, Laura Mackenzie, Audrey McClellan and the ever constant Mike, Scott Quittem who was everywhere doing everything, Joy and Jim Gullickson and family for the incredible sweets and savories and St. Andrew?s Society for making it all possible with their sponsorship. Thank you, thank you. 2. One very steamy ?Magic Carpet Ride.? Audrey McClellan calls her latest book, Magic Carpet Ride, an affectionate spoof of the romance novel genre. Okay, it?s her book; she can call it that if she wants to. I have read it. I call it a fairy tale for grownup girls that is so steamy it should come wrapped in a plain, brown wrapper. Yikes! This book is almost too hot to handle. In their dreams women hope to meet the likes of Angus MacQuirter who is a modern day version of Jamie Fraser in many ways. Where are these men? I don?t know about you, girls, but I am planning my next vacation on Cape Breton Island. Maybe I?ll be lucky enough to be frightened by a Heeland Coo, run off the road into a ?ravine horrible? and rescued by a Scottish barbarian in a kilt. Hey, a girl can dream, can't she? Wanna read this book? Be sure to allow plenty of time for cold showers! If you can?t wait until the Scottish Fair to pick up a book from Audrey, call 1-800-901-3480 or go to: _www.BookHouseFulfillment.com_ (http://www.bookhousefulfillment.com/) . 3. Another GREAT Scottish Ramble. A Thousand Thanks to Liz Michalson and her enlisted family members for another splendid Ramble. Is it just me or do they just keep getting better and better. Can hardly wait ?til next year. 4. May we have the envelope, please? And the winner is. . . ! Winnipeg, with the emphasis on WIN for pipe band members from Minnesota. While we were frolicking at the Ramble, our pipe bands were up in the Great North, eh, at the annual Pipe Band Competition. Mike Breidenbach sends this report: Here is some news from the Macalester Pipe Band. In Winnipeg the band got 2nd place in the medley event and the March-Strathspey-Reel event in grade 3. Quite a few of our pipers and drummers won medals in the solo competitions while Steve Sutherland was the grade 1 drummer of the day, Stephen Elias won the grade 2 piobaireachd trophy, and the band Mid-Section won the trophy for best mid-section at the competition. Congratulations to the Mac Pipe Band. George McCracken is the big winner in Winnipeg. He won the Open/Professional Bass solo at Winnipeg. The auditorium was full of people who came just to watch George and he received a standing ovation before and after his performance, which was outstanding. It was a wonderful moment in band life. George Wins Bass Drumming Competition George McCracken, who has been playing the bass drum for almost 40 years, entered his first solo bass drumming competition in Winnipeg this past weekend. He had a large crowd watching his performance being supported by both Minnesota Pipes & Drums and Macalester Pipe Band. Doug and Eileen Stewart even flew up to watch this event. When George finished playing the crowd roared, the judge even applauded him. He received a standing ovation and there were tears by George and others in the audience. When the winners were posted, 1st place was by George's name. George received his medal and written comments (which were great). Then to George's surprise, during massed bands, he received a traveling trophy and a keeper trophy. It was a great weekend for George; he said the only thing missing was Theresa (his wife). >From Sally Gordon: Minnesota Pipes is as proud as anyone of George's accomplishments. Minnesota Pipes and Drums took home the second place trophy for Grade 4 band competition at Winnipeg on February 19. Soloists receiving medals included Tom Hinrichsen, Bill Gilchrist, Joe Hawthorne and Mark Lucas. Congratulations MPD! KEVIN?S LEAVING ? LEFT??? MPD Band Manager, Kevin Bauder, has relocated to Vermont for new job responsibilities. His family will be joining him after school is out this spring. Kevin will be sorely missed at Minnesota Pipes and Drums and the entire band community. His email is _kbaud@yahoo.com_ (mailto:kbaud@yahoo.com) if you'd like to wish him well. Anyone interested in booking gigs for a pipe and drum corps should contact Mick McCoy, _mmc_1963@comcast.net_ (mailto:mmc_1963@comcast.net) , or Sally Gordon, _nodrogyllas@hotmail.com_ (mailto:nodrogyllas@hotmail.com) . 5. They could have danced all night. . . and all day. . . and they did! The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society launched the celebration of its 30th anniversary in grand style at its annual ball weekend February 18-20. The weekend started with the delightful reception and ceilidh on Friday night at Olivet Congregational Church with music by Sherry Ladig's latest combo, the Night Scotsmen. It was wonderful to see so many faces old and new and, so much talent! Ceilidh acts ranged from original poetry, to song, to belly-dancing, and even to sign-language interpretation! No one could forget the performance by those heartthrobs, "Bad Boy Burns and the Scotch Tapes." Mick Jaggar, eat your heart out! The guests of honor were RSCDS Chairman Stewart Adam and his wife, Chris, who flew in from Edinburgh to join us for the special occasion. They found out quickly that Minnesota Scottish country dancers know how to have a good time! Of course the highlight of the weekend was the grand ball itself at the University of St. Thomas on Saturday night, at which we welcomed over 100 guests. Music was provided by Thistledown, who had more than one musical surprise up their sleeves. Between Pat and his banjo (yes, you can SCD to banjo!) and guest spots by piper Tad Myers, they kept us all on our toes in every sense of the word. Everyone had a splendid time! With the music like that, it wasn't surprising that many of us never sat down the whole evening! The local talent was again on display at the silent auction, coordinated by Cassandra Olson as a fundraiser for the branch and featuring many unique and beautiful items hand made by our members. Courtesy of Sherry Ladig, we were able to present the Adams with a new tune, "The Borealis Hornpipe" and a variation, "Stewart in the Snowbank," as a memento of their visit. And this being Minnesota, Stewart was able to experience the latter first hand when we exited the hall at the end of the dance and discovered 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground! The weekend didn't end there. Many of us braved the snow storm and partied well into the night at the afterglow party hosted by Scott Marsalis and Jim Morehouse, and a surprising number of those night owls made it to the post-ball pancake brunch on Sunday at our house. Just to emphasize how energetic Scottish country dancers are, I'll add that a sizeable group made it to the Scottish Ramble that afternoon, where they performed with Thistledown! Thanks and congratulations go to the many members of the branch who worked hard over the past months to bring this event together, but most especially to Tim Dickson, our ball chairman. For those who missed this great event, there will be other opportunities to help us celebrate our 30th anniversary year. In conjunction with our Failte Ball next December, we are planning a weekend workshop with guest instructors Bruce and Jo Hamilton from the Bay Area of Northern California. Watch SNIM for more information on this in the coming months. / Lara Friedman-Shedlov Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Twin Cities Branch AND IN CLOSING Yes, it?s long, but February is always a very busy month, with not only the events past to report, but the events future to list. Thanks Jamie, ***** The web site for finding legislator's contact info, including home phone numbers for state legislators, is _http://geo.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/districts/start.html_ (http://geo.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/districts/start.html) . All you have to do is type in your street address and zip code and it will give you a list of your representatives web sites. On each web site is address and phone number for local offices, national offices if applicable, e-mail addresses and, in the case of state legislators, their home phone number. (I encourage my clients to call their legislators at home on Sunday around dinner time, but then my clients are usually calling to complain.) Just thought I'd pass this along so you can include it in the next SNIM (or even a special mailing) so folks will be able to call to encourage the House passage of the National Tartan Day initiative. **** Like they say in the weight loss commercials - "Do it Now!" I wrote to Martin Olav Sabo yesterday and it took - maybe - five minutes. Thanks everyone Babs -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... EXTRA! TARTAN DAY BALL IN TROUBLE Message-ID: <64.51420715.2f6c4ede@aol.com> Hello Everyone Yup, you read that right. The Tartan Day Ball IS IN TROUBLE. Perhaps it is the date, perhaps it is because it is 10 days BEFORE Tartan Day or perhaps it is because of a thousand other reasons, but the reservations for the Tartan Day Ball have not been coming in. On Monday, March 21 I have to give Edinburgh USA our count and at the moment we have barely 2 dozen reservations. Our planning and budget is based on 100, the number we have had in years past. Now I know there are many of you out there who have attended in the past, and perhaps you have been intending to email or phone me with your reservations, in which case I can only say, DO IT NOW! We will have to be at 70 at least by Monday or we may have to cancel, which would be a sad state of affairs, indeed. So, remember the fun of past Tartan Day Balls, imagine the fun if you have never attended, and call or write me with your reservation today. Entree choices are: chicken, salmon, vegetarian pasta. Events include: social hour piano by David Lohman, Haggis ceremony by Jack Barker, Kilt (kilt skirt, tie, scarf, etc.) christening by St. Andrew's Society, and Dancing to the music of Thistledown with the calling by George McCracken. Valet parking is free but gratuities always welcomed. And the announcement of the 3rd annual life time achievement award. Woo Hoo. Pick Up the Phone, Give me a Call. 612-869-7163. Reservations can only be confirmed by receipt of your check. Make it out to MN Tartan Day Cooperative and mail to: 6324 Wentworth Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55423-1541.
