From BabsFayth at aol.com Fri Apr 1 12:20:05 2005 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Fri Apr 1 12:22:52 2005 Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 5, No. 43, April 01, 2005 Message-ID: <12f.5a38f834.2f7edcc5@aol.com> Hello Everyone Happy Huntigowk! The first of April is generally known as Huntigowk in Scotland and ranks amongst the most joyous of days in the juvenile calendar. It is a day when people try to catch each other by telling lies and playing jokes on each other up until noon. The name is believed to come from an old trick where a person is sent out with a message: Dinna laugh, an' dinna smile But hunt the gowk another mile. The 'gowk' is another name for the cuckoo, which is a silly bird. At each place the message bearer is sent on to someone else. (Thanks to Chuck Bushey of Yellowston Highland Supply) April 1 and so far no sign of lions. Hip, hip, hooray! Now if this weather will hold until next Wednesday, what a glorious Tartan Day we will have. According to Ken Barlow?s KARE 11 forecast: Wednesday 4/6 partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain showers. Highs 50 to 55. However weather.com increases the chance of precipitation to 40% so I think good advice is to bring an umbrella just to be on the safe side. And dress in layers. MN State Capitol in St. Paul For the seventh year in a row, Scots, Celts, Scottish wannabees from around Minnesota, Twin Cities and the borders of Wisconsin, will gather to celebrate our heritage and the contribution of our ancestors to the history of Minnesota and the United States. JOIN US! This is the place to be on April 6. Yes, we know. It?s a Wednesday and a work day and a school day. Well, have ya not heard of Scottish Fever? Often afflicts those of Scottish origins early in the morning of April 6 necessitating a quick call to your Scandinavian boss begging off for the day, too overcome with Scottish Fever to sit at your desk all day, eh? As for the wee ones. What a great way to expose them to their heritage. No teacher, Scandinavian or not, could deny such an excellent reason for playing hokey. Help them give a report and their teachers will LOVE you. Gather at the foot of the Mall about 11:45 a.m. to line up for the Parade of Tartans. Look for the Parade Marshall. At the stroke of noon we will process up the Mall gathering on the steps for our brief program. Bring your Tartan Banner Flags; keep them with you until the Calling of the Clans. Que up behind the microphone, announce your clan, say a few glorious words about your clan, and then place your Tartan Banner flag in the banner stands behind the speakers? microphone. Eric Ferguson of Clann Tartan and Bill Lochen of the 42nd Highlanders have assured us they will do their very best to put together a musket brigade for the firing in the Circle of Honor as they have done the last few years. We are hoping to have the Highland dancers, Royal Scottish Country Dancers, and the pipe bands there as well, God willing. All we need is YOU and the blessings of the weather prognosticators, (see opening paragraph for weather forecast) as we had last year, to make it a perfect day. Questions??? Call me. AND! When it?s all over, those looking for a wee nosh, can join us as we gather at Will Bill Watkin?s new stompin? ground, the Lake Street Garage, 3508 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, 612-729-8820, grab a wee bite, lift a pint and gives thanks for being Scots on this most glorious day of the year. 8. With a resolution now passed by both houses of Congress, Senate Resolution in 1998 and the House Resolution this year, we might now hope to at least get Tartan Day on the calendars. Do not hold your breath about getting a day off from work, though. After over 150 years the Irish are still hoping for such a miracle for St. Paddy?s Day. WEATHER: ugh! We may lose the game of rain roulette. However, we are Scots, a little rain isn't going to melt us, we are not made of sugar, we are tough! But not stupid. Tartan Day will go on RAIN or SHINE. Dress for it, bring a brolly (I call mine a magic wand. Maybe it will help keep the rain away.) And don't let a little "Scottish Sunshine" keep you at home. PARKING: The Parking meters take quarters. Bring lots. The spaces closest to the capitol have 2 hour limits, those down by the Veteran's building have 4 hour limits. Because of the one way streets you may have to drive all the way around the Mall area to get to the parking areas by the Veteran's building. PARADE: The Grand March of the Tartans will step off at noon. Try to be there between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Don't worry about your tartan banners getting wet. They are made of wool and they will dry nicely. Think sheep. Look for Steve Kincaid who will be serving as our Parade Marshall if you have any questions. Pipe Band first, then Clann Tartan, the others as you wish. CALLING OF THE CLANS: Keep your Tartan Banners with you when you enter the steps area. Line up behind the microphone for the Calling of the Clans when called. Mac McPherson and Don Cogswell will be conducting the "Calling" so follow their instructions. After you have answered the call for your clan, THEN bring your banner forward and place it in the flag stands that will be behind the speakers' microphone. NOTE: If you do not have a Tartan Banner, you can still answer the call for your clan. Don't be shy. Say whatever you like about your clan: your clan motto, something about it's location in Scotland, or just the name of your clan - "Clan Minnesota is HERE!" Organizations are also encouraged to answer the call, i.e., St. Andrew's, TCSC, RSCDS/TCB, MSCDA, etc. Bring your banners if you can. GROUP PHOTO: After the last event on the program - the Benediction - stay where you are, come together to the center of the steps and be ready for the group photo. Don't leave to go down to the Court of Honor for the Musket Salute until we give the word. Our photographer is SaDee Soderlind. MUSKET SALUTE: Follow the pipe bands back down the mall to the Court of Honor where members of Clann Tartan and the 42nd Highland Regiment will offer their Musket Salute to those who have fallen in defense of our country. A stirring sight. LUNCH: EVERYONE is welcomed to join us at Wild Bill Watkins favorite eating place, the Lake Street Garage, 3508 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, 612-729-8820. Located between the old Molly's and the new Molly's on Lake Street, but with a welcome guaranteed by himself to be warm and friendly, it's a great way to unwind after the fun of the day and to compare notes with others who were there and to get to know more members of our Scottish Community. GOODBYE: Tomorrow will be my last day as MN Tartan Day Coordinator. There are a couple of lads that have been approached to take over Tartan Day but they have not made the commitment as yet. Thank you all for your enthusiastic participation these past 7 years. We have had the biggest and most enthusiastic Tartan Day Celebrations held outside of New York City. Be proud. Hope it continues. TELEVISION PROMOTIONAL SPOT PRE-EMPTED BY THE POPE: Aye, if you set your DVR/TIVO/VCR to record the appearance of Joy and Jim Gullikson on the KARE 11 Today show yesterday, what you saw was the moving of the Pope's remains from his house to his church. KARE 11 producers have assured us the segment, which was recorded, will appear on tomorrow morning's show. A bit of a close call, but better late. . . PHONE NUMBERS: Before 10:00 a.m. 612-869-7163, after 10:00 a.m. 612-308-8180. (If I don't answer, it may be because I didn't hear it ring. Leave a message.) THANK YOU ALL, WE'LL SEE YOU TOMORROW. The Osakis School Board allegedly were advised several days in advance that Eric Schulvetenberg, who does not attend Osakis H. S., intended to wear his kilt when he escorted Osakis student Jena Schoniger to her prom that was held last Friday Night (April 15) at a resort in Alexandria. The Osakis School Board allegedly denied Eric the right to attend the Prom in his kilt as they felt it fell into the same category as shorts. His kilt was not "appropriate" and did not meet the "dress code guidelines" the School Board had issued. He could attend, if he agreed to wear pants. Eric, to his credit, stood his ground and refused to wear other than his kilt, a tribute to his Scottish Heritage. He was not allowed to participate in the Prom activities, i.e., Grand March, dinner, etc., but watched the events from the sidelines as a spectator. Our initial reaction to this foolish decision on the part of the Osakis School Board was outrage, fury, and militant anger. We've cooled down a bit since then. We have come to realize that this is an opportunity to do some outreach education to a community that bills itself as a "Christian community of 1587." On their city's web site they don't give a breakdown of the heritage of the population but I am guessing - not a lot of Scots. One of the most inflammatory remarks made to the reporter by a gentleman of Osakis was, "Why don't you focus on the good kids?" Was this an implication that any young man who would wear a kilt is not a "good" kid? If you agree, as I and a majority of the leadership of our community agree, that this School's action was an insult, not only to this young man, but to our entire Scottish community and to our heritage, I suggest you write this School Board and express your views on their poor handling of this situation. Thanks to John McKeen, who did some good detective work at WCCO Television, the news report as it appeared on last Friday Night's news broadcast can be found at: _www.wcco.com/topvideo_ (http://www.wcco.com/topvideo) and then click on _Prom controversy: Bridgette Bornstein reports (3:13)._ (http://wcco.dayport.com/) which is about 11 items down the list. But do not delay, as this story may disappear from the web site within 24 hours. (As you will notice from the video, young Eric was splendidly decked out in kilt - do you recognize the tartan? is it possibly Clan Donald of Glengarry? - Prince Charlie, Formal Shirt, Black bow tie, sporran, hose, flashes. All he lacked were ghillies, but he worn fine black formal shoes. This was certainly not some hooligan wearing a kilt as a joke.) We are presenting an offer to the School Board of the Osakis School community, to travel to their city and offer a Kirkin' o' the Tartans as an educational opportunity, to help them understand why we Scots cherish the kilt and the tartan. In addition, William Bruce and Don Cogswell are suggesting inviting these two young people to our Scottish Fair on July 9th as a way of supporting his brave stance. Now - How can you help? I think the school board needs to hear from our community, not just a half dozen or so leaders, but from all of us, the rank and file of the Scottish Community of Minnesota, the Wisconsin and Iowa borders - all Scots and Celts of good will. On a lighter note: I have just learned that this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. CDT, Public Television, Channel 2 in the Twin Cities will air a Smart Travels program featuring Edinburgh and St. Andrew's. Vol. 5, No. 44, May 01, 2005 Message-ID: <1a7.36f3062a.2fa56515@aol.com> Hello Everyone Omigosh, but we have had a very busy couple of weeks, haven?t we? We are going to lead off this issue of the SNIM with an update on the Kilt/Prom incident at Osakis High School. Our involvement came about when my grandson?s ?other? grandmother asked me at a baseball game on Friday, April 15 if I had been listening to the radio. No. She then told me about the incident and how it had been the cause celebre on WCCO Talk Radio that day. I was shocked. Later that evening she called to let me know that WCCO Television, Channel 4, was going to do a story. The rest is history. . . Many of you wrote letters to the School Board, to the principal, to the Superintendent, including copies to Don Shelby and I thank you for that. One of our subscribers, Laura Billings (a MacKintosh) happens to be a columnist for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. We talked on the phone; she called Osakis, and then wrote a terrific article that appeared in last Sunday?s paper. (http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/11467595.htm to access her article on line.) At the suggestion of Tom Parry, former prez of SAS, I sent a kind of press release to several newspapers in Scotland and got calls from two of them, including The Herald in Glasgow. Cameron Simpson of The Herald wrote and published the story you can find here: http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/38018.html#inSection We have just learned that TVSCOT has posted an article at Scotsman.com and can be read by visiting: http://heritage.scotsman.com/news.cfm?id=450742005. This is far from over. The School Board has yet to apologize to young Eric Schulzetenberg for discriminating against his rights to wear his kilt ? full, formal Scottish attire, it was. Laura Billings reported the Principal replied, ?Absolutely Not!? when asked if they intended to apologize. To which the imminent Tartan scholar, Dr. Phil Smith replied, ?Makes him less a man.? Indeed! We have had responses from all over the world, including one from a chap who has contacted the ACLU. Eric, Jena and his family are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Scottish community in Minnesota and around the globe. If you didn't see the story on WCCO Television, go to this link: http://wcco.com/siteSearch/local_story_108191621.html And just last Wednesday night, KBJR-TV and KDLH-TV reporter Barbara Reyelts, (Clan McPherson and champion Highland Dancer) offered DSHA?s position on the controversy. Read her report at: http://www.kbjr.com/morenews/morenews-story.asp?n=3 You can still send an email offering your support of Eric and your shock and disappoint with the Board?s decision. Write to John Peterka, Superintendent of Schools at jpeterka@osakis.k12.mn.us or the Principal Tim Roggenbuck at troggenbuck@osakis.k12.mn.us or both. Yup, that?s the message from Scottish Fair, V. P. Lyaman McPherson. The fair needs volunteers. They are not asking for a lifetime commitment, just SOME of your time. Give a note to Lyaman at lyaman@mnscottishfair.org and ask him what YOU can do to help make this year?s fair even bigger and better than last year. The wee Scottish gods will smile on ya. 2. Calling all Scots who can Talk Audrey McClellan is stepping up to the plate and she needs your help to hit a home run. Got your attention? Good! Read on. Encouraged by many distinctly varying groups within our Scottish community, Audrey is proposing the establishment of a Scottish speakers? bureau. To be called ScotsTalk, this group will furnish speakers, with or without slides, to present programs to interested groups of all sizes throughout the community at large. However, you can?t have a speakers? bureau without speakers. So, if you enjoy talking about any aspect of Scottish life, genealogy, culture, heritage, and/or history, drop Audrey a line at: audreym@visi.com . A couple of things she would like to know: 1) what would you like to speak about? 2) Would you require a fee for your presentation? 3) Would you require reimbursement for mileage? Conversely, if you are a member of a group that would be interested in hearing such a presentation, please contact Audrey at the email address given above. 3. Beyond the Rainbow. Okay, this is a bit of a stretch. But I think I can make it work because there are those who have informed me that Judy Garland had some Scottish ancestors. So that is my feeble way of legitimizing this blatant promotion of a really, really great show now playing at the Great American History Theatre in Saint Paul. Written by my good friend, William Randall Beard ? that?s a Scottish name, ain?t it? ? with the musical arrangements by my friend David Lohman (our social hour entertainer at past Tartan Day Balls) this is a magical show that takes you to the stage of Carnegie Hall in 1961 where Judy performs one of her many comeback concerts, while the history of her life swirls around her. It?s stunning. Jody Briskey who ?channels? Judy in the concert part of the show will take your breath away ? no foolin?. The show runs through May 29, 2005. Call the box office at 651-292-4323. Jody will have an understudy in for some shows in mid-May, so be sure you tell them you want to see a show with Jody Briskey. And, yes, she sings, ?Over the Rainbow.? A Scottish Discussion Forum Clann Tartan has opened a new online discussion forum, the Grey Wolf Tavern. A discussion forum is a place people can post and read messages on a variety of topics. Think of it like a digital ?bulletin board?, instead of just sticking notes up anywhere on it, the board is organized into specific topics. The Grey Wolf Tavern is dedicated to topics of interest to the Scottish Community. You can view the forums by going to http://greywolf.clanntartan.org ? messages can be read by anyone, but to post messages you will have to register a username. Currently, the Grey Wolf Tavern is where you can find current and past issues of the Scottish News in MN Newsletter, and Babs has also started posting copies of the Scottish Tartans Museum Newsletter for folks to read, as well as other news of interest. (you can also get to the Grey Wolf Tavern through the links on both the clanntartan.org and tartandaymn.org websites ? on the Tartan Day sight, click on SNIM at the top of the home page, then on Grey Wolf Tavern) There is also the Scottish News Public Updates folder. This area is open to registered users to post about events that may have changes or come up at the last minute and don?t make it in to the SNIM Newsletter. Please feel free to post your groups event announcements here. There are also other topics on Scottish history as well as current events for folks to start various discussions. Flowers of the Forest ? Marcia Sue Bigelow It is with the heaviest of hearts that I report to you the death of the mother of an outstanding member of our community. Those of you, who attended Tartan Day this year, and other years, will remember J.R. Bigelow, the fine young man in the Marine Dress jacket and Marine tartan kilt. I had occasion to meet J.R.'s mother on several occasions and had a number of great phone conversations with her over the last five years. She was enormously proud of her son and proud of his involvement in the Scottish Community. She was his "date" for the First Tartan Day Ball held at the University Club a couple of years ago. Her obituary, as published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune follows: Marcia Sue Bigelow, age 49, passed away on Tues., Apr. 12. She was born in Bismarck on Aug. 1, 1955, graduated from Center High School in 1973, Bismarck School of Nursing in 1976, and Minot State in 1987. She was a Capt. In the North Dakota Army National Guard, and also worked at Golden Valley Psychiatric Hospital, the VA Medical center, Mt. Olivet Nursing Home, Apple Valley Healthcare Center, and American Healthways. She was a kind hearted mother and friend, always thinking of others first and contributing to her many charities. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ruby; her brother, Buell; and her son, Ted. Survived by her brother, Kurt; sister, Ellen; and son, J.R. 2. Tartan Day has a new Coordinator. It?s true, it?s true. There is a new Coordinator for Tartan Day. Yes, I can hear the cheering. Her name is Dana Atchison Drazan. Dana is a Clan Gordon and has six beautiful daughters, five of whom are Highland Dancers, and one son who is about to graduate from High School. (Do you think he EVER gets the bathroom?) As you may have noticed from the future events listing, Dana is off and running, already having scheduled the Tartan Day Ball, the Capitol celebration and invited those Arrowhead Scots to participate as special guests. WOW! This woman does not let grass grow under her feet. She will be looking for help and I hope you will be there to offer that help when she asks. You may contact her at czechd9@aol.com Welcome, Dana, and thank you, from all of us. 3. Banned Kilt wearer to be guest of the games. At the invitation of President Don Cogswell and the Board of the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games, Eric Schulzetenberg and Jena Schoniger will be guests of the 2nd Annual Minnesota Fair when we gather at the Dakota County Fairgrounds on July 9. Eric will have an opportunity to see that ?Real Men do wear Kilts? with that same pride of heritage that he demonstrated in Alexandria when he was denied the opportunity to escort Jena to her Prom because he insisted on wearing his kilt. Hurray for Eric! Hurray for Jena! We can?t give her back her Prom Night but we can surely show them both what Scottish Pride is all about. 5. John and Ardis McIntyre Ivory are 3rd Annual Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. The 3rd Annual Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to a couple whose enthusiasm for their Scottish heritage hasn?t faded a bit in over 25 years of participation in the Scottish Community of Minnesota. They have made important contributions to many of our Scottish organizations. As members of the St. Andrew?s Society they coordinated several Tartan Balls. For 6 years, they planned and executed the Mac Fair Eve Ceilidh sponsored by MCSC. Ardis served as secretary of that organization for over 10 years and she and John were among the original eleven founding clans. John and Ardis began bringing goodies for the MCSC members who arrived early to put up their tents at the Mac Fair, goodies that began with maybe 3 items and developed into a full blown breakfast buffet. They saw a way they could help; they?ve been doing it for 20 years. When the Coalition began having pot lucks for the meeting lunches, you could count on Ardy to bring the Haggis, home made in her kitchen. Along with Florence and Johan Hart and Ellen and James McDonald, John and Ardy were present at the founding of the Twin Cities Scottish Club and went on to help with their Burns? Night Dinners. John and Ardy were the unanimous choice of the MN Tartan Day Cooperative members to receive the 3rd Annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations and thanks to both of them. BONUS Surprise!
