From BabsFayth at aol.com Wed Jun 1 07:39:55 2005 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Wed Jun 1 07:42:16 2005 Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 5, No. 45, June 01, 2005 Message-ID: Hello Everyone Ah, the Merry Month of JUNE??? Yes, 'tis the season of weddings and high school graduations. Any day now, the rain will abate and we will have lovely summer days, with soft, balmy breezes. . . Ooops! For a minute there I forgot I was in Minnesota, the land of four seasons, all of them possible in the same day. The lilacs have come and gone, the irises are beautiful; the box elder "helicopter" seeds now cover the lawns, just in time for the cottonwood fluff to add their border accents along streets, sidewalks, and flower gardens. Not even the MN Scottish Fair is safe from the infiltration of this summertime headache. Don Cogswell, President of MSF sends this IMPORTANT information: All visitors to the Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games on July 9 MUST enter the fairgrounds from Highway 3. This is due to construction on 220th Street. I am guessing there will be signs, but forewarned, etc. . . 2. MORE FAIR INFORMATION Don also sends this information: If people would like some posters for the Fair, please email me your address and how many you would need. (dcogswell@mnscottishfair.org) Those interested in sponsorships for the Fair should send them in by June 6th, they are tax deductible and very much appreciated. See you at the Fair. 3. MINNESOTA SCOTTISH FAIR NEEDS YOU!!! The message from Scottish Fair, V. P. Lyaman McPherson is simply this: The fair needs volunteers. They are not asking for a lifetime commitment, just SOME of your time. Give a note to Lyaman at lyaman@mnscottishfair.org and ask him what YOU can do to help make this year?s fair even bigger and better than last year. The wee Scottish gods will smile on ya. 4. MISSING ? Minnesota Tartan Flag A Minnesota Tartan (regular, not dress) Flag, custom made by Mary Libhardt for William Bruce is Missing. William had loaned the flag to MCSC and thought he had picked it up following the October 2004 meeting. He wants to take it to the "19th Annual Illinois Saint Andrew Society Games" in Oak Brook on June 18. Efforts to locate the flag have dead-ended. William is appealing to readers of the SNIM in the hope you may have seen it, have it, or may be able to help him locate it in some other way. Some additional information: 1. Size - 4' by 6', 2. Regular Minn. tartan (not the dress), 3. Two metal grommets (for attachment to flag pole,) 4. Custom made by Mary Libhardt, 5. May have a very small "brown sauce" stain in one corner. Please check your flags, and if you think you may have William's flag, contact him at wthebruce@bitstream.net Thanks. 5. Rebecca Rides for MS ? You can ride with her as a sponsor. Rebecca Mary MacKenzie Volkel, known to those of you who have been with us for Tartan Day on the steps of the State Capitol, as the wonderful young clergy person who offered the Invocation and that great "Deep Peace" Benediction from Iona has undertaken a very challenging event. But, let her tell you, in her words: As the leaves fill out and the ice disappears from the lakes and the air begins to warm, the preparations begin for the annual 150 mile bike ride to raise money and awareness toward a cure for MS. Slowly, we get on our bikes and remember the aches and pains and the thrills of riding again! This is my sixth year of doing the ride and I remain overwhelmed by the blessing and opportunity it presents. I have many friends in my life who are affected by the devastating effects of MS and I write now to ask your help in working toward a cure. This year a group of seven of us are making the trip together. We will drive up to Duluth, MN on June 10th and spend the night. Then, early on June 11th, we'll bike from Duluth to Hinckley, about 82 miles. Sunday morning, we'll get up early and bike the rest of the way down to The Twin Cities-- probably another 77 or so miles. Along the way, we will be inspired by countless people wearing shirts with pictures and names of all the folk in their lives affected by MS. I will be riding with 6 names on my shirt. The collective goal is to raise over 2 million dollars this year. My personal goal is $1000. If you would like to make a pledge to my ride, please send a check made out to the MS Society to my address: 4446 Cedar Lake Road #6, St. Louis Park, MN 55416, Please know of my deep gratitude for any support you can give. Gratefully, Rebecca Thanks to everyone who recognizes the importance of this event and sends a contribution to Rebecca. The amount is not important; it's the support that counts. This cause is particularly dear to members of Clan Cameron as our new chief is challenged by this disease. 6. Calling all Scots who can Talk So you have had a month to think about how you could contribute to the new Scottish Speakers Bureau to be called ScotsTalk, and you have been meaning to call Audrey McClellan. Okay? So what's keepin' ya? She canna build a speakers bureau without speakers. So, folks, if you enjoy talking about any aspect of Scottish life, genealogy, culture, heritage, and/or history, apparel, i.e., great kilts, ersaigs, etc., drop Audrey a line at: audreym@visi.com . A couple of things she would like to know: 1) what would you like to speak about? 2) Would you require a fee for your presentation? 3) Would you require reimbursement for mileage? Conversely, if you are a member of a group that would be interested in hearing such a presentation, please contact Audrey at the email address given above. 7. Beyond the Rainbow. Great News! You were too busy during May to get over to the Great American History Theatre in Saint Paul to see their superb production of Beyond the Rainbow, starring Jody Briskey who "channels" Judy Garland, right? Well, by popular demand, the show has been extended for at least another two weeks Do not delay, do not pass go, do not collect $100, go straight to Saint Paul and catch this amazing show. It is a magical. It takes you to the stage of Carnegie Hall in 1961 where Judy performs one of her many comeback concerts, while the history of her life swirls around her. It?s stunning. Jody will take your breath away ? no foolin?. The show runs through June 12. Call the box office at 651-292-4323. And, yes, she sings, ?Over the Rainbow.? He was looking for Scottish Immigrants to interview for a project he was working on. Lucky for him he found the TCSC website and his first call was to Lindsay, a Scottish immigrant! Andy and Lindsay agreed to help Mr. Cha with his project. The results of the project can now be viewed on MPR?s website. This portion of Police Week is sponsored by the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies, Inc. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as "Police Week". Every year since, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Enjoy! 6. Macalester College Pipe Band & MSCDA Dancers Spring Concert ? A Review WOW! WOW! WOW! Those of you who have been subscribers to the SNIM for any length of time know that I am seldom at a loss for words. But I am here to tell you kids, this band concert took my breath away. Since Mike Breidenbach took over as Pipe Major of this band they have just gotten better and better. Mike fielded a band of 16 Grade 3 pipers, 3 tenor drums, 5 snares and of course a bass drum. Sharing a bit of insight into the grading procedures for competition he talked about starting and stopping cleanly, tuning, and playing complicated tunes. In addition to their competition medley, the band played several march medleys. A highlight in an evening of highlights was the solo set by Mike Kotch, Mr. Flying Fingers. Grade 5 Band Pipe Major, Ben Peterson led his pipers through an exciting medley of marches. The Dancers were wonderful. Under the leadership of new MSCDA president, Caroline Cygnar, the dancers were in top form. I can't remember seeing them dance better. They had a certain indefinable quality that gave their performance a vivaciousness that was very exciting. We cannot slight Drum Sergeant Steve Sutherland, whose drum corps must be the envy of every pipe band in the Midwest. And speaking of drums, no appearance by the Mac Pipe Band would be complete without a command performance by George McCracken on the Bass Drum. Well done, one and all.
