From BabsFayth at aol.com Mon Aug 1 13:13:25 2005 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Mon Aug 1 13:15:12 2005 Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 5, No. 47, August 01, 2005 Message-ID: <1ab.3c9a8613.301fb235@aol.com> Hello Everyone "I'm melting! I'm melting!" No, I am not the wicked witch of the west, although I am guessing there are those who might argue that. Would I welcome a bucket of water being thrown on me? You Bet! If this 90 degree weather continues, however, I fully expect to be nothing more than a wee grease spot on the pavement. (Please remind me of this come January when I am complaining about being Nanook of the North, okay? We had an amazing Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games and a great roaring cheer must be given to those brilliant members of the Board of Directors, and to all of the Volunteers, who, in spite of a day much like today, presented us with the wonderful gift of our own Scottish Fair. Ready, everyone, on my count . . . 1, 2, 3, "Hip, Hip Hooray! Hip, Hip, Hooray! Hip, Hip, Hooray!" To Don Cogswell, Mac McPherson, Liz Michaelson, Jim Harris, Richard Cady, Greg Crawford, Jeff Bryan, Andy McCracken, Mary McKinley, Susie Schmitz, all the members of the Board of Directors, even those I have failed to mention, you have the love, gratitude, and appreciation of our entire community. Moran Taing! Now here is your assignment for next year's fair, to be held Saturday, July 15, 2006. If you attended this year's fair, and we sincerely hope you did, (if not, WHY NOT?)plan to invite at least one person to attend with you who did not attend this year. That way our attendance figures will double, the pleasure and enjoyment for you and your friends will double, and the chances of OUR Scottish Fair continuing on into the far foreseeable future doubles. Need I remind you that this is what we always longed for? Our own Scottish Fair. During the years at Mac, we grumbled about not having enough say into how things were going to be done, there was never enough room, Food Vendors were parked in Parking Lots, Clan tents were squished together, and walkways were so crowded at times it was impossible to travel from one part of the grounds to the other. Now we have this beautiful site, acres of space, room to walk, room to grow, beautiful shade trees, Oz green pastures, sparkling white tents poking through the tree tops and guess what? We get to have some say in how things go. WOW! It is not too early to contact Mac or Don and volunteer to help with Fair 2006. The work starts "yesterday." I C E your mobile phone. This is not a suggestion to put your mobile in a cooler during this steamy weather. This suggestion comes to us from Lynne Alexander, member of SAS Board of Governors. (Thanks, Lynne) The London incident has promoted concerns and I share with you what one of my European colleagues just sent. As long as everyone knows what ICE stands for, it is not a bad idea. A useful thing to add to your mobile address book! It was thought up by an ambulance man/paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones but they didn't know which numbers to call and he thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under. Following the disaster in London, East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston. The idea is: that you store the word "I C E" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. Please share with your friends and family. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. 5. MSCS Information. Vernon, Washington winning her Fourth National Highland Championship at the USIR competition. Kira has won the National Championship 4 out of the last 5 years. Congratulations to Kira and her parents Don and Karyl Cogswell. We are so proud of this young woman. She follows a great tradition of Highland Champions coming out of Minnesota. So maybe she did go to school in Michigan and maybe she is working in Michigan and maybe she will live in Michigan after her coming nuptials, but she is still OURS! She is still a Minnesota Lass. 2. Clan Johnston/e MN Fair Ten is the Best - AGAIN! Jackie Johnston sends this piece of great news: I don't know if this is something that should come from the MCSC instead but Clan Johnston/e won best clan tent this year. It was great news for our new State Commissioner Dee Johnston as she had only been appointed two weeks before the fair. Dee lined up seven volunteers for the tent and made a few changes so she was very pleased to see Clan Johnston/e come in first. 2nd place went to Clan MacRae and third place was Clan Keith. EXTRA! SPECIAL TELEVISION VIEWING ALERT! Message-ID: <15a.56cb7ab9.3034ba6d@aol.com> Hello Everyone This special edition is to alert you to two programs coming up on KTCI, channel 17 in the Twin Cities of particular interest to those of Scots heritage. We are indebted to Scott McKechnie for alerting us to these coming programs and to David Lohman who was able to get the precise broadcast information. VISIONS OF SCOTLAND - Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. (Set your TIVO or DVR so as not to miss this program. Additional information, see below)) An aerial tour of Scotland includes Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness, St. Andrews golf course, the Hebrides Islands and North Sea fishing ports. ON EAGLES'S WINGS - Wednesday, August 24, 2005 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Set your TIVO or DVR so as not to miss this program. Additional information, see below) A musical celebration of the history of the Scotch-Irish features bands, choirs, an orchestra, pipes, fifes, drums, dancers and dramatic vignettes, tracing some 500 years of Scotch-Irish accomplishments in the British Isles and North America. VISIONS OF SCOTLAND - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION VISIONS OF SCOTLAND is a thrilling tour of Scotland's historic and picturesque destinations from the heather-clad hills of the Highlands to the low-lying borderlands, shot in high definition from a helicopter-mounted camera and set to regional music with informative narration. Starting in the south at Selkirk, once host to a revolutionary army but now the picture of tranquility, VISIONS OF SCOTLAND explores the complexity of the country's geography and history from a new perspective. In the popular destination capital at Edinburgh dramatically set on a series of volcanic eruptions, viewers trace the royal mile of restored buildings recreating the city's medieval beauty, climb the 287 steps of the memorial to Sir Walter Scott (Rob Roy, The Bride of Lamamoor) without catching their breath, and experience the romance of castles and fortresses. The aerial view offers an unprecedented angle from which to search the mysterious deeps of the Loch Ness, and the lush greens at St. Andrews golf course where the game began are seen from above the sightline of the longest drive. This journey through great glens, stunning waterways, sacred abbeys, hardy fishing ports and craggy heights showcases a bright, legendary land like never before. Be sure to let them know that there is a large Scots-Irish community out there to support the broadcast. Support of this program with a membership pledge will send a strong message to public television programmers and producers across the country - it may help get the special distributed to PBS stations that haven't yet committed to airing it, and could lead to production of additional programs by WLIW New York further exploring the Scots-Irish legacy. The DVD or VHS of the special, with bonus material that won't be broadcast, is available as a "thank you" gift for a donation of $100 as a fundraiser for Scots-Irish cultural programming on public television. Irish recording artist Peter Corry (best known as "Javert" in Les Miserables) leads a cast of actors, dancers, choirs, bands, pipes, fifes, drums, and full orchestra. The compelling story is set in both the past and the present, but the themes are timeless and universal - emigration, separation, love and loyalty. The soundtrack is almost exclusively original music by John Anderson. The Scots-Irish helped define working class America as our country developed. Country Music, NASCAR racing, and more than ? of America's presidents trace their roots to the Scots-Irish, and more Americans than ever are identifying themselves as Scots-Irish with the Census Bureau. Today, there are more than 22 million people in the United States who are of Scots-Irish descent, but many only know their heritage through their surname. ON EAGLE'S WING tells their story in a celebration that is innovative and spectacular in its presentation. ON EAGLE'S WING is a parallel of modern day and historic events. The show opens in modern America starting with the anthem "Do You Know Who You Are?," inspiring a look back into the past to see the echoes of history in modern actions. Starting in Scotland and continuing through Ireland and America, spanning 500 years in song and dance, the show weaves historical re-enactments throughout the musical drama. The show gets its name from the first immigrant vessel out of Ireland to the U.S., called "Eagle's Wing." Jimmy Carter, himself one of 17 U.S. Presidents of Scots-Irish descent, said about the stage show taped in Belfast last year, "Just as Riverdance was successful in portraying Irish culture through music and dance, so will On Eagle's Wing facilitate a better appreciation for the story of the Scots-Irish." A production of WLIW New York and Straight Forward Productions, Ltd. Conceived and Written by John Anderson. Executive Producer for WLIW New York: Roy A. Hammond. EXTRA! Scottish Community loses a Stalwart Member. Message-ID: <126.642fe54d.3044b75a@aol.com> Hello Everyone, Word was received early Saturday morning of the passing of one of the stalwart members of our Scottish community, Roderick McRae. Tom Lucas, in his notice to members of the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans members, an organization Rod helped to build said it best: a fellow Scot has departed from life?s battle field and is now marching with his clan in the highlands of lore. After a long battle with cancer, Rod died surrounded by loved ones. The following information has just been received about his services: To be held Friday, September 2, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at the Twin Cities Friends Meeting, 1725 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, located one a one-half blocks west of Macalester, next to Ramsey Middle School. Additional details and a full obituary will appear in the September 1 Scottish News in Minnesota (SNIM). Please keep his wife Peggy, and his family in your hearts and prayers in these difficult days.
