From BabsFayth at aol.com Mon May 1 18:30:17 2006 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth@aol.com) Date: Mon, 1 May 2006 18:30:17 EDT Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 6, No. 56, May 01, 2006 Message-ID: <230.a54050c.3187e5f9@aol.com> Hello Everyone, Hurray, Hurray, the first of May, outside (fill in the blank) begins today. And bring on those May flowers. We have had nice rain ALL weekend, but of course it was needed. The fields and forests were very dry and volatile. Maybe some sunshine tomorrow, but back to the rain by Wednesday. (sigh) We will be grateful come July. It was an unbelievable month. Incredible events for Scots in all parts of Minnesota and the Western borders of Wisconsin. And by way of apology, all of our special events, Tartan Day, the MN Scottish Fair Fundraiser, and the special tribute to George edition, required additional items in your email boxes. I am sorry, but when these important things come up, we consider it our duty to pass them on and share them with you. We beg your kind indulgence. And besides, my son Jack, he of the Haggis speaking, has given me absolution. And the fun continues with many events scheduled throughout the summer and throughout the region. Contact our secretary, Janet McKernan, jmckern at cems.umn.edu, or call Lara Friedman-Shedlov at 612.874.8299 ANNOUNCEMENTS - Details below 1. Sponsor a golf cart? A Porta-Potty?? Or more??? How about a program advert? We are getting down to the wire. Our Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games needs us! It needs us to dig deep and think generous. The costs of mounting a Scottish Fair like ours are astronomical. For instance: To rent one golf cart ? our fair needs 3 ? the rental cost is $300 each per day. To rent Porta-Pottys the cost is $200 each per day and I don't know how many we need, but I can safely say ? lots! The cost of renting the bleachers is $2,000 for the day. That's right ? 2 grand, 2K, 2 thousand smackarollians. And that's why, unless a miracle happens, there may not be bleachers this year. It's called tightening the belt. We know that few of us have those kinds of $$$ lying about, but you could give $20 and sponsor 10% of a Porta-Potty. Every single dollar you give gets us closer to our goal for our fair. Our fair is 100% volunteers. There are no highly paid coordinators. Everybody on OUR Fair Board is also trying to make a living to support his or her family. We owe it to them to show our appreciation for what they are doing for us, to support them as best we can. I am stealing this from something else, but "Give until it hurts." Here is an idea. Maybe you get a complimentary ticket for doing something helpful. How about saying, "Thanks for that comp, but I'll pay the $15 to get in." Here is a note to all of the officers of our Scottish organizations throughout Minnesota. Those who will be attending the MN Scottish Fair on July 15 are your captive audience. How about an ad in the Fair program inviting Fair visitors to visit your web site or stop by your tent for more information about membership, piping lessons, dance lessons, etc. The ads are very reasonable. >From $35 up to $300. Clan Associations, how about a small ad inviting Fair goers to your tent. Won't cost you much, helps the fair, and you may get your investment back in new memberships. Contact Peggy at peggy at uncommongatherings.com All MSFHG promotional ads for the 2006 program must be in possession of the Fair organizers to be included in the program no later than Monday, June 5, 2006 at noon. Hey kids! It's not "their" fair anymore. It's OUR fair. What are you willing to do to make sure there is a Fair in 2007? 2. Hot off the presses! The Scottish Fair brochure. Liz Michaelson sends this important information: We have thousands of Scottish Fair brochures that were delivered last week. If people are interested in mailing them to their friends, family, etc. I can mail a supply (max 100) to them. Just have them e-mail me with the quantity wanted and where they should be sent. _liz at uncommongatherings.com_ (mailto:liz at uncommongatherings.com) Posters are available as well, for those contact Don Cogswell at _dcogswell at mnscottishfair.org_ (mailto:dcogswell at mnscottishfair.org) 3. Thank yous in order for a grand Tartan Day Minnesota Tartan Day Coordinator, Dana Drazan wants to Thank all volunteers and participants for the Grand Tartan Day turnout for the 1st Annual Tartan Day Haggis Hunt, Bagpipe Bands Workshop, Tartan Day Gala Dinner and State Capitol Tartan Day parade and celebration. And let's not forget a huge thank you to Dana Drazan, Tartan Day Coordinator, for an absolutely fabulous celebration. Dana, you are the best. 4. Housing needed for Guthrie Theater Intern Can you help? Our good friend Barry ZeVan, whom you will remember doing an amazing presentation of the Toast to the Tartans at the Tartan Day celebration a few years back (and you may remember Barry from other exposures, as well) has asked our help in finding housing for a young woman coming from Montana to spend 8 weeks interning at the Guthrie Theater. Her parents are willing to pay $350 - $400 a month for rent and being on or near a bus line is important. She will require the housing from mid June to mid August. If you have a room you could make available for this young woman please call Barry at: 763-544-9262. Thanks. 5. What's going on in Scotland? Find out here. Spamalot ? not the musical I hate SPAM, you hate SPAM. If I never am invited to try Viagra again, or invest my meager funds in can't miss schemes, it will be just find with me. AOL, bless their maligned little hearts, dumps all mail they suspect of being SPAM into a separate file and I have the option of deleting it or reading it, my choice. However, not all ISPs, I have learned, are so accommodating. In the last month, over 100 subscribers to the SNIM have been bounced. Now some of those, granted are dead email addresses, etc. But some are lost because the SNIM is being dumped by SPAMblack software programs installed by your ISP to protect you from unwanted SPAM mail. That's the good news. The bad news is that many of you, through no action of your own, are having the SNIM dumped as SPAM. Of course we here at the humble offices of SNIM are hopeful that you don't want us dumped into the SPAM bin, but would rather read all the news that's fit to print from the Scottish community of Minnesota and the Wisconsin borders. So, what I would urge you to do is this: take whatever measures you need to take to persuade your ISP that the SNIM is not SPAM and let the words go forth. Thanks. 9. Pipe Sergeant, The Reverend Pari Raelyn Bailey, STS, pastor at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Swift Falls, Minnesota will lead the closing prayer at the May 14 National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies March and Service. This is the main memorial event for the week. Later on the 14th, MPPB senior piper Bill Gilchrist will help maintain Police Week's Midnight Piper tradition with a solo pipe salute at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, a solemn tribute to fallen law enforcement officers. For additional information about the observance of National Police Week got to MPPB web site: _www.mppb.org_ (http://www.mppb.org/) and follow the links. Congratulations to this outstanding pipe band. We are very proud. 2. Where were the Scots? Aye, it's a question we've been askin' since last Saturday night. The stage sang with the music of the Minnesota Police Pipe Band, the Macalester College Pipe Band, Legacy, a rockin' Ceilidh band, the darling wee dancers from MSCDA, members of Clann Tartan with a lesson in Great Kilt wrapping and Carol McCormick telling her fine tales ? but where oh where were the Scots. We canna think a wee bit o' Scottish weather kept 'em ta home. Scots are surely hardier souls than tha'. So, yes, the attendance last Saturday night at the Minnesota Scottish Fair Fundraiser concert was disappointing. In an auditorium that holds 500, perhaps 100 seats were filled. The MSFHG Board had done a splendid job with arrangements, Thistle Rose (Heather, Cameron, and Sarah) were there with their fine Scottish foods, 3 Celts were there with T shirts and other tempting wares, Deedee McPherson had advance fair tickets to sell. We were all there, but where, oh where were the Scots? Aye, 'tis a puzzlement. To those that were there and enjoyed a fine evening, many, many thanks. 3. Mickey Cameron sends Tartan Day Greetings from Taiwan I got the newsletter and you said to send pictures, so here they are! (Sorry, photos not available to add to the SNIM. Ed.) These were taken at Carl Becker and Son, where I am now working in Taipei, Taiwan. In case it isn't clear, the t-shirt is a Clan Cameron Northern Lights Branch model. The Celtic Soul >From Tom Lucas, President, MCSC: I don't know if you go to the Westminster Church Celtic Services, but when we were at the church Sunday for Easter services I noticed a brochure on a 3 day conference your SNIM readers may be interested in. Celtic Soul ? Ecology, Spirituality & Sacred Journeys (an international conference) _http://www.wisdomwayscenter.org/content.asp?id=508_ (http://www.wisdomwayscenter.org/content.asp?id=508) May 11-13 (various locations in St. Paul, MN) Featuring J. Full or partial registration is available. Their invitation reads: Come with us on a pilgrimage?a journey into the heart of the Celtic Soul as we explore early Celtic Christian understandings of care for the earth, the life of the spirit and the significance of sacred journeys. These concepts are rooted in the pre-Christian indigenous Celtic people of Europe and have great wisdom for us as we face the challenges of the 21st century. Stimulate your intellect, exercise your imagination, experience contemporary ecumenical Celtic prayer and ritual, savor delicious food, sing, and celebrate! Registration Deadline is May 5th. 5. A wee Gilchrist lass makes her entrance. Piper Bill Gilchrist sends the following good news from Breckenridge Colorado: Yes, finally, our wee Ella, our first grandchild, arrived and she is a handsome one at that. Ella was born to our youngest daughter, Sarah Mary (Clydie) and her husband, Nick, yesterday, 18th April, at 2:00 PM weighing 6-13 and a respectable length of 20 inches. By coincidence, the '6-13' was both the date and weight of our son, Scott, when he was born in Munich in 1964. Sarah, Nick, Debbie, sister Heather, and Billy are happy, relieved, and most thankful that the wean finally arrived 'on time', was not a pre-term' (as first thought), and is seems to be bearing up under all the attention given her. Yesterday morning early, we, Deb and I, drove down the mountain in a hefty snowfall, while Heather (our older daughter) headed up from Castle Rock (south of Denver), and that thick weather stayed until about mid-day -dark and snowy. Sarah, who began strong laboring about two AM, and Nick left for the hospital down in Frisco about three-thirty. Deb and I about six o'clock. At the hospital, however and as preparations to start the birth began the clouds rolled away and the bright sunshine began - a nice and welcomed coincidence to Ella's arrival. It was indeed a pleasure to look up to the vast mountains that surround us here, to see the glistening snow caps, feel the cool breeze, but it was never as lovely to us as it was yesterday as we looked out on the wonders beheld all comforted the birth of Ella. A day to remember! 6. DSHA Holds AGM, elects new board. The Great Hall of the Kitchi Gammi Club in Duluth was filled last Friday Night with happy celebrants of the 30th Anniversary of the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association. A wonderful Scottish buffet was offered that included many and varied Scottish dishes, some looking very foreign but to those brave enough to venture a taste, absolutely delicious. The AGM preceded the dinner at which Lois Craig-Johnson was elected president, Alan Mackenzie, vice president, Ginny Johnson and Joan Barrett were both re-elected Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Joan and David Bouschor will be in charge of the Newsletter and web site and David will handle publicity. Karl Craig-Johnson, Teresa Peterson, and Annette Page were elected At-Large members of the Board. Dinner was followed by wonderful entertainment that included the Windchill Brass, and brass ensemble that also includes bagpipes and drums, Top Six, a mixed vocal ensemble from Marshall School and dances by members of the DSHA School of Highland Dance. Attending from the Twin Cities were Doug and Eileen Stewart, Jim Harris and his "almost" step sister, Barbara Humphrey. 7. Why Scotland can't Handel the BBC's new World Cup anthem Stuart Hoarn brings this article of interest to our attention: THE BBC was accused of "insensitivity and tactlessness" last night after choosing to mark the World Cup this summer with a piece of music that celebrates the man responsible for the battle of Culloden. If you have previously registered, please contact us again so that our information is correct and up-to-date. No information will be given out about a speaker until the request is cleared with the speaker. An example of the programs available: New speaker Mike McClellan presents a 45-minute talk about Scottish swords and knives in the period 1400-1450. Of interest especially to ages 10-16, Mike?s program emphasizes audience participation, encouraging his listeners to imagine themselves growing up in late medieval times, where it was vital that boys over the age of ten knew how to use weapons for self-defense in daily life. Several swords are displayed, cautiously and with respect. AND IN CLOSING AN UNFORTUNEATE OMMISSION AND A SINCERE APOLOGY As those of you who are regular readers of the SNIM know, we published a special edition as a tribute to George McCracken on what would have been his 78th birthday, April 24. As will happen in our frenetic world of cyberspace, things get lost, mislaid, accidentally deleted, etc. Thus was the fate of a beautifully written tribute to George written by Sherry Ladig. We record it here, by way of a sincere apology to Sherry for its ommission, as one person's tribute to a beloved colleague and friend: I first met George in the early eighties, I think, when I was playing with Thistledown at the Scottish Fair. He was doing everything, of course, playing in the pipe band and then running back and forth to teach dancing and staff at the Twin Cities Scottish Club booth. I remember this little twinkly guy with a Scottish accent grinning up at me (for, short as I was, George was a wee bit shorter---perfect for looking into his eyes when we danced), and saying, could I teach a bit while ye play, do ye think? Out of that casual question came years of George "teaching a bit while we played"---at public events like the Scottish Fair, Burns' Nights, weddings, socials, parties, anywhere he could get up a set to dance. He could teach anybody, keeping the instruction simple and getting people to move right away, and his love for socializing and Scottish dancing were infectious. He requested Thistledown often, referred us to gigs whenever possible, and always made wherever he was standing the most fun place in the whole room. I was crazy about him, looked forward to every gig we shared, and in the last few years I knew his health wasn't so good, so two years ago, I wrote a waltz in his honor and named it "George McCracken." I was amazed someone hadn't written him a tune before. He was so proud of that tune; I had given him a framed copy, and he carried it around, proudly showing it to everyone. George always appreciated any gesture anyone gave him. It was a great honor when members of Thistledown and Night Scotsman were asked to play the waltz at his funeral, and as we played it, I hoped George was smiling and dancing as he heard it. I never knew a more bighearted nor kinder man, and I and all of George's many bands will miss him more than I can say. There is none to take his place.
