MCSC Announces Best Clan Tent Award and MN Fair Kudos - Best Clan Tent Award at the 2006 Scottish Fair Submitted by Tom Lucas, MCSC President On behalf of the Board of the MCSC we would like to congratulate all the clans participating at the event and announce the winner of the Best Clan Tent award. Second place was a tie between Clan MacKinnon and Clan Kincaid. I hear one of these two clans has said they will not lose next year. Now the challenge is on. The best Clan Tent award went to Clan Donald. Their tent has been a great tent for years. They deserve the recognition. Congratulations! It was a great fair this year. Amid stifling heat, the event went off as planned ? rain or shine, shine, shine. Clan Row looked great. The heat was a challenge, but everyone met it and beat it back to make this year?s event a big success. Thankfully, those who needed it found their way to the Sheriff?s office for a little air conditioning to cool down. The parking lot appeared to fill up quickly in the morning and it seemed as though the crowd was a little better than last year. Official gate information has not yet been presented to the MCSC. We hope to hear details soon. After speaking with several clans, it appeared that many of them were getting good visitor traffic. Hopefully this is a good omen. We look forward to the competition next year! 3. MCSC seeks nominations Submitted by Lindie Wessling, Secretary MCSC The Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans will be holding their quarterly meeting on October 14, 2006 at Christ Community Church in Maple Grove. We have held several meetings there in the past. This meeting is our official Election Meeting. We are in the process of taking nominations for the following positions on the Executive Board: President, Secretary, and Delegate at Large. These are two-year positions. Please contact someone on the nominating committee consisting of: Ardis Ivory (no email, 218-768-4056 home), Jack MacMillan (jacmacm at aol.com, 952-994-3474 cell), or Ned Henry (aliglen at aol.com, 651-784-6228 home). Please email or phone them with your suggestions of good, interested persons for these positions. All members will be notified via separate email the directions to the church for the October meeting. The lunch will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the meeting starting about 12:00 noon. Please call or email Lindie Wessling, Secretary at 763-521-2632 or lindiew at comcast.net for questions. Hope to see everyone there. 4. MCSC Prez announces RenFest Participation Submitted by Tom Lucas (Clan Keith), President, MCSC Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans (MCSC) Finalizes Plans for the 2006 Renaissance Festival, Highland Fling Weekend, September 9 and 10. At the June meeting the members of the MCSC directed the board to determine if we could improve the event participation conditions for our members at the RenFest this year, e.g. could we have anything similar to what we have had in the past in the form of the group tent. We were asked to determine if a more unified presence could be negotiated with Mid America Festivals (MAF) and to ensure enough volunteer participation. We are pleased to announce that our discussions with the MAF were successful. The MCSC is on track to once again have a strong presence at Renfest. We have come to an agreement on a proposal for grouping our tents together in order to create that more unified presence. This should increase both the visibility and patronage. In addition, we are planning to try something a little different and need your help. The presentation this year will focus on Scottish Culture and History versus solely individual Clans and Families. We would like to create a presentation focusing on who the clans were and are, great moments in Scottish History as it relates to the Renfest time period, and the Clans and Families, which stand as the foundation of Scottish Culture. We will use the last segment as a conduit to bring visitors back to modern times by educating them on how Scottish Clans are alive, well, and living here in Minnesota. Working together as a unified group, we can benefit all of the members of the MCSC as well as any other groups and organizations that would like to join with us in the challenge to make this a NEW and Improved premier event for the Scottish community. This concept is not intended to eliminate individual clan presentations, but to work together to share resources and skills to create a unified appearance and message. Jonathan Palmer, Clan MacFarlane and MCSC Delegate at Large, will be spearheading the planning and management of this event for the MCSC. He will need a lot of help in coordinating this event in a short amount of time. If you would like to be involved by volunteering materials (tents, tables, chairs, charts, maps - etc.), manning the tents or have ideas on how we can make this happen in a positive and effective manner, please contact him right away. Please join us in making this RenFest the best we?ve participated at in years. You can connect with Jonathan ? phone 612-522-0545 (H) or e-mail jhpalmerjp at aol.com. Thank you for your help in continuing to making this a great year for the MCSC and the Scottish Community. 5. Royal Scottish Country Dancers Announce RenFest Schedule. Submitted by Lara Friedman-Shedlov The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Twin Cities Branch will be appearing once again at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The group will do 4 half-hour performances per day every day of the festival starting the weekend of August 26-27 through October 1st. Look for us at "the bear*" and be sure to join in the audience participation dance at the end of each performance. *We recently received news that the giant carved bear that guards the stage has had to go in for emergency care, and we're not sure if he'll recover in time for this year's Renaissance Festival. However, we'll be dancing there, bear or no bear. 5. Creative Embroidery will host Scottish Booth at the Minnesota State Fair Submitted by Bernadette Galaba Creative Embroidery will have a Scottish Booth at the State Fair of Minnesota for 2006 My booth was very well received last year. Comments like, "About time a Scottish Booth at the State Fair". to other comments, I've been to Scotland, I'm going to Scotland, My daughter is going to school in Scotland, and many more. Displaying the map of Scotland sure made for great conversation in the booth. So come and join the clan, starting August 24 to September 4. I will be in the Bazaar area. Hopefully I will be running videos of Scotland throughout the show. If anybody has any questions, please e-mail me sew66 at comcast.net 7. RSNO poll reveals Flower of Scotland as nation?s favourite ?anthem? Flower of Scotland is the nation?s favourite choice for a national anthem, according to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra?s (RSNO) recent poll. Over 10,000 votes were registered in the online poll, which had five candidates: Flower of Scotland, Highland Cathedral, Scotland the Brave, Scots Wha Hae! and A Man?s a Man for A That. More than 65,000 unique website visitors had taken the opportunity to hear the five contenders online, which were recorded last month at the Last Night of the ScottishPower Proms in Edinburgh and here on www.rsno.org.uk. Flower of Scotland was the winner, with 41% of the vote, with Scotland the Brave coming second with 29%. In third place was Highland Cathedral with 16%, A Man?s a Man for a? That was fourth (7%), and last was Scots? Wha Hae! (6%).The RSNO decided to run the poll following the Scottish Executive?s decision to leave the choice of a standard national anthem to the people of Scotland. The announcement of the winner was made at the RSNO Last Night of the ScottishPower Proms at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 1 July. Votes were cast from every continent apart from Antarctica. The majority of votes were from the UK, but a significant number responded from the USA, Canada and from remote locations such as Mongolia, New Caledonia, and Christmas Island. RSNO Chief Executive, Simon Woods said: ?I am thrilled that the RSNO has been able to use its position as Scotland?s national orchestra to propel forward the debate on a new national anthem for Scotland.? http://rsno.org.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=119&Itemid=1 8. SNIM says Thanks to our Grand Tent Minders We would be remiss not to extend sincere thanks to those dear souls who braved the brutally hot day and hosted the first ever tent sponsored by Scottish News in Minnesota. Tartan Day button designer of many years standing (since 2000, I think) Jack A. Barker, stepped up, brought his tent from Madison Wisconsin, recruited his good pals Mark and Caroline Lueneberg, who became the real heroes of the day, and they are not even Scottish. But Mark being the stalwart lad he is proudly wore a kilt in the MN Tartan. Many new subscribers were signed up - Welcome to all of you as you receive your first issue of the SNIM - and many, many folks went home wearing the very attractive 2007 Tartan Day Button. Kudos to you all. And many thanks to Tom Lucas, Clan Keith Convenor and MCSC prez, who designed the excellent ad for the SNIM that appeared in the MN Fair program. 3. A Rare Investment Opportunity Submitted by Joseph Croft, Co-owner, The Celtic Croft Could you please make an announcement for me? This fall we are going to begin publishing our catalog in full-color, which is a big step for us. Our goal is to become the "Scottish Lion" of the 21st Century. We are looking for investors within the Scottish Community to help us finance our growth. Anyone interested should please contact me for more information. My email address is Joseph01 at TheCelticCroft.com. Our phone is 763-569-4373. Looks like a great opportunity here, for farsighted Scots in Minnesota. Joseph and Lorie have been loyal, supportive members of our community for many years, participating as Associate Members of MCSC, members of St. Andrew's Society, vendors at the Minnesota Scottish Fair and A Scottish Ramble. They are filling a need in our community and in the greater Upper Mid-West area. Give them a call. Hear what they have to say. (Ed.) 5. Regrets We regret that we cannot include in this issue any information on Tartan Day 2007, the Haggis Hurling contest held at the MN Scottish Fair, the results of the Highland Dance competition at the MN Fair, the full results of the piping competition (thanks to Sally Gordon we have the results for MPPD), the results of the Heavy Athletic competition, nor a post mortem on the MN Fair itself. This information was requested of the responsible parties, but their replies were not received in time for this issue. Perhaps we will have something for you next issue. They are as follows: Transportation: We have a 47 passenger bus reserved leaving Friday morning and returning Sunday afternoon. It?s about 360 miles and should take around 6 ? to 7 hours. The cost is $1725. I suggest that we share the cost if enough are interested in taking the bus. The following would be the cost for various group sizes: 20 people = $86.25 25 people = $69.00 30 people = $57.50 40 people = $43.15 In contrast, a car getting 20 MPG and gas @ $3.10 per gallon would cost approximately $124 for an 800 mile round trip allowing for about 70 miles of driving in the area. At 30 MPG, it would be about $83.00. And it?s not just the money. It is relaxing and enjoyable riding a bus with friends. The bus company is located in Lakeville and has more than enough parking so that we can all drive there and park in their lot while we are away. If we do this, I suggest that I pay for the bus and we all bring checks and reimburse me on the bus for each share as we travel south. If you want to ride the bus, please let me know that and how much of the cost per person you would be willing to share. Then I can determine if we have enough people to finalize the reservation for the bus. Lodging: We have a block of rooms available in the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Rock Island arriving in the afternoon of August 25. The room rate will be $79 per night or lower. (That?s the remaining detail). I should know the exact rate in a day or so. I will communicate the rate as soon as I know it. I will also communicate the details of how we will reserve and pay for the rooms. On Golden Pond: The group rate that we have is $38.00 per person. The doors open at 5:45 PM Friday with a buffet dinner from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. There is a ?pre-show? at 7:15 PM with the curtain rising on ?On Golden Pond? at 7:45. We have a block of 30 tickets reserved. If we exceed that number, we may be able to get more but that is not guaranteed. Our seats are generally together with some in the front row. (All the better to cheer for Babs). By the way, the tickets are reserved in the name of ?The Babs Humphrey Fan Club?. Now here?s the important part. These tickets can only be held until August 15th so I must have your commitment by then. I know that this isn?t much time but this didn?t start to gel until very recently. Please email me or call me ASAP if you want to join us. The Celtic Games: The Games run from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a Ceilidh from 6:00 PM to Midnight. The bus can take you back to the hotel around 5:30 or at the end of the Ceilidh (or thereabouts). The cost is: Adults: $10 Students $ 5 Seniors over 65 $ 5 Children under 6 Free Family pass: $25 (5 family members of any age) The tickets are available at the gate. On Sunday, breakfast is on your own (we can still eat together if we want to). We will leave for home mid-morning. We may have a surprise for a lunch stop. If we don?t take a bus, obviously, your timing is your own. But the hotel, theater, and games details will be the same. Personally, I hope that we can get a group together and take the bus. It would be a lot of fun. I will need names of those staying in the room (ex. Mr. & Mrs. Tartan), the number of beds needed, whether smoking or non-smoking, and a phone number where you can be reached. I will need the information by the same date as the ticket information; August 15th. I will send the information to the Sheraton Four Points Hotel and they will reserve the specific rooms. Each group will pay for their rooms themselves at the hotel. If you have any questions, you can call the hotel at 1-309-794-1212 and ask for Mickey. Or call me and I will try to answer them. In addition, Babs has advised that Jumer's Casino Rock Island is a mere two block walk from the Sheraton Four Points or the Circa 21 Dinner Theatre Playhouse. Check their web site for additional information. _http://www.jumerscri.com/whoweare.html_ (http://www.jumerscri.com/whoweare.html) - A gaming casino located on an old River Boat.
