From BabsFayth at aol.com Fri Sep 1 10:42:02 2006 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2006 10:42:02 EDT Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota! Vol. 6, No. 60, September 01, 2006 Message-ID: <596.3d868e7.3229a0ba@aol.com> NEWS FLASH! ! ! A Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games exclusive to the SNIM! It's official! The Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games board of directors have listened to your concerns about the excessive heat experienced in 2005 & 2006. In response, we have negotiated with our same wonderful location at the Dakota County Fairgrounds and are able to move to Saturday, May 19, 2007 when the weather is certain to be much less hot & humid. With this change, the planning time for 2007 instantly lost 8 weeks, so help from volunteers, old and new, will be critical to our success. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Liz Michaelson at _emichaelson at mnscottishfair.org_ (mailto:emichaelson at mnscottishfair.org) . Please indicate what you would like to volunteer for, and provide your phone number/s and mailing addresses. Liz will forward your e-mail to the appropriate person. We will have flyers with the new date, etc. available at the Renaissance Festival Scottish weekend. Thanks to Liz Michaelson for providing the above information. The Fair Board has responded to the concerns of the Scottish community and moved the Fair date to one during what we hope will be a somewhat more "user friendly" time of the Minnesota Spring. As a gesture of appreciation for their response to this community's concerns, it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to get behind this fair, support this Fair Board, and make 2007 the year that our Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games comes of age. Volunteer! Do it Today! Well and with that wonderful news. . . Hello Everyone And greetings for the last time from Rock Island Illinois. Two shows remaining before I pack up and head home to Minnesota. It has been a long, hot, but creatively rewarding summer. Two shows, one tonight and then close tomorrow night, Saturday. And yes, for those of you who know about my crying at supermarket openings, there will be tears. I "cry for happy" dontcha know? Many thanks to my "almost" stepbrother, Jim Harris who organized a theatre/Celtic games outing to Quad Cities. From what I could tell, aside from the torrential rain of the morning and early afternoon at the games, a good time was had by all. Highland Dance Classes Resume Submitted by Barbara Reyelts, DSHA Highland Dance Instructor HIGHLAND DANCING REGISTRATION 2006-2007 Highland Dance Classes will resume MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2006. Classes will run from 4:30 to 5:30 and 5:30 to 6:30 on Monday evenings. Classes will be held at The Marshall School, 1215 Rice Lake Road, Duluth. Please park in the lower parking lot and not the drive-through circle. Registration will be in the Chapel to the left after entering the second set of doors, at the end of that hall. Dancers are expected to be in class 10 minutes before session begins so they can be fully dressed and ready at their starting times. Dancers in the second, more advanced class are expected to warm up and stretch out on their own. Barbara and Diana will work with strengthening and barre-work. Diana and Barbara will alternate classes during the 4:30 and 5:30 sessions. It is critical that dancers practice so that class time can be spent moving students ahead in technique and dance knowledge. Practicing also improves stamina so that dancers can concentrate on learning new steps and improving their dance technique in class. Proper dancer attire is comfortable shorts, t-shirts, and knee socks. It is preferred that dancers not wear long pants, sweat pants, or running tights. Dancers also need dancing slippers. Hair should be pulled away from the face. Dancers should bring a water bottle and a pen and notebook to each class. Please come to the same class level and time you attended last year. Barbara and Diana will decide which class level best suits a dancer's ability. We will try to accommodate a family's schedule but the class position recommended by the teachers will help your dancer see the most improvement. First session runs September 18 through January 29. Second session runs from February 5 through June 18. Second session registration will be held at the start of class on February 5th. No classes will be held when Duluth public schools are out of session. In inclement weather, notice of emergency class cancellation will be emailed. *When registering please provide an email address as notification of class cancellation and dance performance schedules will be posted via email. MCSC and Partners to Bring New Scottish Flavor to the Renaissance Festival Submitted by Jonathan Palmer, DAL, MCSC As part of its participation in the 2006 Renaissance Festival, the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans, working with its partners in the Scottish Community, will present a new format focused on the Renaissance period. Where as in the past, our focus has been individual Clan tables with the MCSC tent, which primarily presented modern Clan information and some history, this year we are diving deep into Scottish history to present a program of education and culture that will inform and entertain. Our programming will consist of Individual Characters, Presentation, and a broad range of Scottish culture and history information. Characters will be roles that people will act in character during Renfest. The personas will be throughout the day interacting with patrons with specialized performances at certain times. Presentations are tied either to a specific character or to a role. Each presentation will be around 20-30 minutes give or take with time for questions and interactions. Characters will be around throughout the day to interact with patrons and answer questions. There will also be general information available on the various organizations and ushers/hosts to answer questions. While the deadline has passed for free admission, we can always use more volunteers. If you are interested in participating, please contact Jonathan Palmer at 612-522-0545 or _jhpalmerjp at aol.com_ (mailto:jhpalmerjp at aol.com) . 3. Royal Scottish Country Dancers Announce RenFest Schedule. Submitted by Lara Friedman-Shedlov The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Twin Cities Branch will be appearing once again at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The group will do 4 half-hour performances per day every day of the festival weekends now through October 1st. Look for us at "the bear*" and be sure to join in the audience participation dance at the end of each performance. *We recently received news that the giant carved bear that guards the stage has had to go in for emergency care, and we're not sure if he'll recover in time for this year's Renaissance Festival. However, we'll be dancing there, bear or no bear. 4. Creative Embroidery will host Scottish Booth at the Minnesota State Fair Submitted by Bernadette Galaba Creative Embroidery will have a Scottish Booth at the State Fair of Minnesota for 2006 My booth was very well received last year. Comments like, "About time a Scottish Booth at the State Fair." to other comments, I've been to Scotland, I'm going to Scotland, My daughter is going to school in Scotland, and many more. Displaying the map of Scotland sure made for great conversation in the booth. So come and join the clan, one more weekend to September 4, Labor Day. I will be in the Bazaar area. Hopefully I will be running videos of Scotland throughout the show. If anybody has any questions, please e-mail me _sew66 at comcast.net_ (mailto:sew66 at comcast.net) 5. Scottish Related News Submitted by Linda Schwefel, Minnetonka _lschwefel at aol.com_ (mailto:lschwefel at aol.com) Minnetonka Theatre under the direction of Kent Knutson has been chosen to perform in the most prestigious arts festival in the world in Edinburgh Scotland the summer of 2007. Over 10,000 schools were considered over the past few years and only 10 were selected. The cast/crew from Les Miserables will perform in Scotland in August 2007 along with many other productions from across the world. It will be a huge spotlight on Minnesota, as nobody else in the 5 state area was selected (I'm not exactly sure what other schools are going). It will cost $500,000 to get everybody there, ship instruments etc. One very generous local businessman has agreed to underwrite 1/2 of the costs, we need to raise the other $250,000. October 28th at the Chanhassen Dinner theatre, we will kick off our fundraising efforts with cocktails/canap?'s, silent and live auction, performance, etc. The theme is Tartan Plaid, Countdown to Scotland! For additional information email Linda at above address of call: 612 280 5351 ? mobile 6. Temps hovering in the 50s these last few days are a reminder that we are indeed into fall and while Indian summer may bring us a few more days of mild, glorious weather, like what is predicted for Sunday and Monday, we are now moving ever onward towards cooler temps, shorter days, and (sigh) winter. For those of you who might question my use of what is considered by some politically incorrect, the word "Indian," let me share this from my good friend and former TC weatherman, Barry ZeVan: I've also been told by many Indians, including chiefs, that the term "Indian" was actually a "compliment" from Christopher Columbus, stating in his journal that the people who greeted him and his sailors so warmly were "Los Indios", or "Those of God," and not because he thought he'd landed in India (which also means, "Of God"). To read more about Barry and his recent and very important documentary "American Indian Homelands," go to _http://www.documentarychannel.com/main/content/view/71/1/_ (http://www.documentarychannel.com/main/content/view/71/1/) And now, on to the events ahead for October, news, and announcements of interest: COMING EVENTS - For details scroll down the page 1. Scottish Related News Benefit at Chanhassen, October 28 Submitted by Linda Schwefel, Minnetonka _lschwefel at aol.com_ (mailto:lschwefel at aol.com) Minnetonka Theatre under the direction of Kent Knutson has been chosen to perform in the most prestigious arts festival in the world in Edinburgh Scotland the summer of 2007. Remembrance Day in Duluth is beautiful and poignant >From Lois Craig-Johnson, President, DSHA Remembrance Day, in Duluth, was a lovely and poignant event as presented by The Duluth Scottish Heritage Association. Gloria Bouschor led a beautiful program, remembering the deceased who had been buried in unmarked graves in the Caledonia area of the Forest Hills Cemetery. Tom Lyle, Kathy Peterson, Steve Reyelts, and Lois Craig Johnson read the names of the deceased. Tom Lyle, who has chaired the Remembrance Day event for many years spearheaded the project which placed headstones on the graves of those Scots whose graves had gone unmarked, some for as many as 100 years. In all 42 stones were placed by DSHA. Rev. Van Oss, the new pastor at St Paul's Episcopal Church offered the benediction. The DSHA Pipe Band played and David Sinclair Bouschor piped a Flowers of the Forest solo before the names were read. Heidi Lyle, who will be remembered from the Tartan Day program in St. Paul last April, sang Flower of Scotland and Loch Lomond. This was Tom Lyle's final year as chairperson of Remembrance Day. Newly assigned chairpersons are Bob Gabres and Sara Deiner. The tea following the graveside program was held at the lovely home of Jon and Joan Barrett. Good fellowship and good treats rounded out a day that was warm, sunny, and perfect for such a poignant service. A large wreath was placed at the cairn. Branches of Heather were placed among the new headstones. 6. Scottish Ramble News >From Liz Michaelson and Peggy Lushine We're busily working on plans for Scottish Ramble 2007! Are you from Tiry, Tyree, or Tiree?? >From the editor, Babs Some of you know that in 1997 I was able to trace my Scottish ancestors to the Isle of Tiree, located in the Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland. I have made two trips there, the first in 2001 after the Clan Cameron International Gathering and the second this last May for the week long A'Bhuain ? Homecoming ? (_www.tireehomecoming.com_ (http://www.tireehomecoming.com/) ) an event bringing members of the Diaspora back to Tiree from Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Scotland, Sweden, and the USA. It was an amazing event. Some attendees were more successful than others finding their families' crofts, gravesites, etc. In our case as the descendants of cottars, there was not much to find. I did have in my personal collections old, scared tintypes that my son arranged to have restored for me. As part of the exhibits for A'Bhuain, Catriona Hunter of An Iodhlann put together an amazing display of photographs and stories of those who had emigrated during the famine years. She was delighted to have the photos we provided declaring my photo of great great grandmother Cameron to be the oldest person for whom she had a photo. Flora MacFarlane Cameron was born on Tiree in 1795. In anticipation of the homecoming and the genealogy room that some of my co-descendants were planning, we took on the task of inputting into a searchable Microsoft Excel file the OPR birth records for Tiry from 1766 to 1854 when Civil Records took over the recording. The first phase, 1766-1800 was completed in April in time for the event on Tiree in May. And it was well used. The second phase, 1801 - 1825 was completed in July and I have just completed Phase 3, 1826 ? 1854. Phases One and Two have been uploaded to the Tiree Genealogy web site hosted by Australian Keith Dash at _www.keithdash.net_ (http://www.keithdash.net/) I am hopeful Phase 3 will be ready to be uploaded by November 1. As I entered the nearly 9200 births occurring on Tiree during that 88-year period, I was amazed to learn that nearly every clan and every Scottish name I knew was represented there. Plus a few that were new to me. Therefore, if you have come up against a brick wall in your search for your Scottish ancestors ? try Tiree. You never know. You may be my long lost cousin. In addition to the genealogy web site Keith maintains, to learn more about the Isle of Tiree check out: _www.isleoftiree.com_ (http://www.isleoftiree.com/) or _www.isleoftiree.net_ (http://www.isleoftiree.net/) or _http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/gshaw/tiree.htm_ (http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/gshaw/tiree.htm) 9. SNIM Celebrates FIVE Years of Publication It's true, it's true. With this issue Scottish News in Minnesota (SNIM) begins its sixth year of publication. WOW! Who'd thought it. What began as a way to let our community know about the plans for Tartan Day, the SNIM has evolved into first a bi-monthly and then a once-a-month publication. We are hopeful that a contribution is being made to the community, to keep you up to date on what's going on and to encourage you to participate by attending the wonderful events that are held each and every month in our state-wide Scottish community. It's been a pleasure. A special thanks to all the loyal "reporters" from our many Scottish and Celtic organizations who keep me supplied with all the news. AND IN CLOSING If you have coming events, news, or announcements you would like included in future issues, please send the information to us (babsfayth at aol.com) and we will publish in the next issue.
