A Great Source about Kilts from STA Governor >From our good friend, Ray Erwin, Clan Irwin commissioner Sent to him by Nick Fiddes (Dr), Founder, Scotweb; Governor, Scottish Tartans Authority As a Governor of the Scottish Tartans Authority, I know how confusing tartans and kilts can seem, especially to a 'first timer'. So I've produced a simple, clear (and totally free!) non-commercial e-book for Scots everywhere, which I hope you'll like. I'd also really appreciate your help. This illustrated guide covers everything to do with kilts - why they're great to wear... choosing the right style ... finding your tartan (& other materials) ... finding a good quality kilt maker ... all the accessories & the right outfits for occasions; and so on. It's meant to help anyone considering traditional Scottish dress for the first time. But even kilt enthusiasts are praising it as impartial, informative, and important (see link in PS below). It's the result of thousands of enquiries about every aspect of buying kilts and tartans over many years. I knew that the time had come to condense it all down into a simple guide. So with much help from colleagues and indeed from competitors, this is the result: _http://www.scotweb.co.uk/nick/buyingyourkilt/_ (http://www.scotweb.co.uk/nick/buyingyourkilt/) There are also important warnings about the serious threat to Scottish heritage posed by a new breed of unethical traders. I say 'important' as they are fast destroying traditional skills and authentic producers and the Scottish community worldwide needs to know about it. PLEASE HELP spread the word to your colleagues and contacts. If you can, please: * add the web address above (or code below) to your web sites, newsletters, blog, etc. * send this message on to your personal friends and family * forward it to all members of your Scottish community * suggest any ideas to spread the word I might not have thought of! We would hugely value your contribution to our cause in doing this. And finally, all feedback is very welcome. It's nice if this is constructive of course. :-) But please do point out where I've missed things, got it wrong, or just committed howlers. I will correct and update, as I want it to be as accurate and inclusive as possible. Thanks! And please just ask if I can help in any other way. Below is the article from today's Mpls Star Tribune: Cargill heir W. Duncan MacMillan dies The able businessman and avid sportsman gave freely and wrote his family's history. By _Ben Cohen_ (mailto:bcohen at startribune.com) , Star Tribune W. Duncan MacMillan, a board member of agribusiness titan Cargill Inc., who wrote the MacMillan-Cargill family history and who led several companies, died of an apparent heart attack at his home near Jupiter, Fla. He was 76. MacMillan, who primarily was in charge of non-Cargill-Inc. family businesses, also gave anonymously to the needy and was known as an avid sportsman, according to information provided by the family. He was the son of John MacMillan Jr., who led the Minnetonka-based company for decades. Duncan MacMillan wrote his family's history, "MacMillan The American Grain Family: An Illustrated Biography," tracing his roots back centuries to Scotland. Proud of his heritage, he would sometimes wear his Scottish regalia, with kilt, at functions where most men wore tuxedoes. "He was a good business person and he gave to people freely," said John Morrison, of Wayzata, a friend and banker, and a former co-owner of banks with MacMillan. "He was honest and straightforward and fun." MacMillan grew up playing hockey, and as an adult, he hunted and fished, and played squash, tennis and golf. "He played everything really well, and he was always fascinated by golf," said Dick Howell, a golf course investor and developer. The family had developed golf courses, but MacMillan wanted to develop his own -- a course just for golfers without surrounding development. He wanted "to make something available for golfers in Minnesota that wouldn't happen otherwise," he told the Star Tribune in 2004. The result was Rush Creek in Maple Grove, a public course that has been the setting of LPGA tour events and the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship. While MacMillan worked for Cargill before and after college, his principal work was leading other family businesses. Some of the firms he led or founded are North Star Steel in St. Paul, which was later sold to Cargill Inc.; AmeriBank of Bloomington and Minnetonka; Willmar Manufacturing; and Silent Knight Security Systems. At the time of his death, he was founder and chairman of the board of the Afton Historical Society Press in Afton, and BenNevis Inc., a customer relations management firm in Wayzata. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, R. I., where he had served on the board of trustees and had funded scholarships and helped to fund a hall that bears his name. He was a donor to the University of Minnesota hospitals, Abbott Northwestern Hospital and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, his family said. When natural disasters struck or a young person needed help to get into college, he stepped up with funds, sometimes anonymously. His first wife, Sarah, died in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Nivin, of Wayzata; daughters Sarah, of California, Katherine Tanner, of Florida, and Lucy Stitzer and Alexandra Daitch, both of Connecticut; a brother, John H. MacMillan III, of Florida; a sister, Marion, and eight grandchildren. Services are being planned. 3. News from Minnesota Police Pipe Band Sally Gordon files this report about MPPD activities and events: FREE PIPING AND DRUMMING LESSONS The Minnesota Police Pipe Band offers free piping and drumming instruction in the Twin Cities area. We want to introduce a broad range of people to instruments boasting a rich cultural heritage. A law enforcement affiliation is not required. Group instruction is provided for the bass, snare and tenor drums and for the Great Highland bagpipe. These are the instruments played in modern competition pipe bands. The two-year course is broken down into 10-week quarters and is designed to provide the basic elements of piping and drumming. Snare students learn drum rudiments and scores in the Scottish drumming style. The bass and tenor program teaches the rhythmic beatings associated with the Scottish bass section. In addition, tenor drummers learn the art of flourishing or spinning the mallets while playing. Pipe students cover basic fingering technique on the practice chanter during the first four quarters. After successful completion of the fourth level, pipe students will begin an additional year of study during which they will be taught how to care for, wrestle with, and, finally, play the bagpipe. The band meets on Tuesday evenings in South Minneapolis. Lessons are scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. More information is available on the band web site, _www.mppb.org_ (http://www.mppb.org/) and by contacting _instruction at mppb.org_ (mailto:instruction at mppb.org) . The next term begins December 12, 2006. This activity is made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council through an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature. Upcoming Calendar: 11/4 -- Minnesota Police will play for the Emerald Society Charity Bash at the Fort Snelling Officers Club 12/12 -- new piping session begins at MPPB. (see obituary below) I will e-mail again with additional information. Please keep wife Dorothy and son Don and the rest of their immediate family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. I have wonderful relatively recent memories of Roy being with us at the Quad Cities Games in August and helping us dry out our display materials after being drenched by that heavy morning rainstorm we had there. He was a fine Scottish gentleman and will be sorely missed by us all. God bless his memory. And additionally William wrote: As promised the following: Royal (Roy) K. St. Andrew, as all good Scots know, is the patron saint of Scotland. But did you also know that he is the patron saint of Russia, Greece, some communities in Germany, and he also is said to favor the intercessions of maiden ladies, old maids, unmarried women, etc.? It is believed that if a woman seeking a mate sleeps naked the night before St. Andrew's Day feast, she will dream of her intended. Also, if on the same day she hears a barking dog, her intended will come to her from the direction of the barking dog. Hmmmmmm? More about St. Andrew ? who is believed never to have set foot in Scotland ? can be found at: _http://heritage.scotsman.com/timelines.cfm?cid=1&id=41442005_ (http://heritage.scotsman.com/timelines.cfm?cid=1&id=41442005) At the end of that article, you will find a link to the news that Scotland's MSPs voted on November 28 to create a new national holiday on November 30. For news about the celebrating of St. Andrew around the world, check out: _http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1774552006_ (http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1774552006) Several members of St. Andrew's Society celebrated St. Andrew with a Kirkin' o' the Tartans on St. Andrew's Day eve at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Thanks to Doug and Eileen Stewart, Steve Kincaid, Father Don Nesheim, and me (Babs) for participating in the annual event, rewarded by a luscious Scottish tea provided by the good ladies and gentlemen of the church. Recently at a Tartan Day Cooperative Regrouping meeting, the observation was made that St. Andrew's Day is the beginning of the "Scottish Season," which will end with the MN Scottish Fair & Highland Games on May 19 ? Ooooops ? not to forget the dance competition in Duluth in mid-June (sorry). Our calendar is full and we encourage all of you to take part in as many of these festive events as you can. Membership in any one organization or another is not required (except for Burns Night in Duluth). All are welcome and there is not an organization among us that doesn't welcome new members. Presidential Proclamation of Tartan Day ? We Need Your Help! Please give the following your closest attention! The following letter was received from Alan L. Bain, President, The Scottish Coalition USA. Dear American-Scottish Community Member: Since the passing of Senate Resolution 155 in 1998 and House Resolution 41 in 2005, The Scottish Coalition and others have been actively asking the American Scottish community to request the President of the United State to sign a Presidential Proclamation proclaiming April 5, in perpetuity, as National Tartan Day. In order to establish to the President's office the appropriateness of this action, the community, as a group, must demonstrate itself toa be national in scope, sizeable in number and a significant contributor to the country's well being, today as well as yesterday. A Presidential Proclamation would make National Tartan Day a National Holiday Observance on ever April 6th, similar to Flag Day, thus placing National Tartan Day on the official United States of America calendar. To convince the President of the community's national character and significance, starting with a grassroots support, The Scottish Coalition, originator of the National Tartan Day initiative, is asking each organization within the American-Scottish community to write a letter, similar to the one enclosed, stating the organization's support for The Scottish Coalition's request for the Presidential Proclamation. In the event the organization you represent agrees to write, as we very much hope it will, most importantly, please make reference to the name of your organization and its membership numbers in your supporting letter. If your organization is an umbrella organization, also indicate the approximate number of members that each organization within your membership group has. Once you have completed these letters, please mail them to the address below: National Tartan Day Presidential Proclamation P. O. Box 802 Stevensville, MD 21666 In addition, if the State or City in which your organization is registered has a staste and/or Local National Tartan Day Proclamation, please enclose a copy with your letter. The Scottish Coalition's intention is to present the letters in a package to the White House Proclamation Office in January 2007. Your support in helping to recognize those Americans of Scottish ancestry for their past and current contributions to this great nation is greatly appreciated. Please also inform your colleagues of this initiative. We want to be sure that all relevant organizations have an opportunity to participate. We will be sending periodic reports to update you on how the project is going. Yours Aye, Alan L. Bain (Editor's note: Don't worry if you aren't an organization, just write a letter stating your reasons why you think a Presidential Proclamation of National Tartan Day is essential and send it off. There can't be too many letters. Let me know if you have questions. Babs) 2. Holiday (formerly Christmas) Gifts with a Scottish Link CALENDAR ? From Scottie (of Scotties Snippets) Rampant Scotland It's that time of year again when the Scottish Pictorial Calendar, which you can print on your own PC, appears on the Rampant Scotland Web site. A notice about the calendar will appear in a future edition of the "Scottish Snippets" newsletter, but this is an advance notification to e-mail subscribers. This year, there are again four possible pictures for every month of the year. There is also a choice of two "cover" pages, if you want to print copies as an extra present for someone. And the only cost is paper and printer ink! While the pages look better if you print them on glossy paper, any good quality paper should produce a reasonable result. And of course, even if you don't want to print a calendar, there are 48 pictures from Scotland to look at or download as desktop graphics. Flowers of the Forest Two wonderful men, who made significant contributions to our community, have died since our last publication, or whose death was recently reported. Royal Bruce ? Since you were all sent the obituary at the time of Roy's death, I thought you might enjoy these comments from William Bruce: I thought you might appreciate hearing something of the funeral for Roy Bruce, which we attended earlier today (November 10). It was held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in West Saint Paul, a very old congregation in a very modern building. Roy and Dorothy have been long time members there, and were married in an older sanctuary building (lost to a fire) some 63 years ago. The Bruce Tartan flag was prominently displayed just outside of the chancel. The funeral mass was beautifully conducted by Father Adrian, who has been Roy & Dorothy ?s pastor for the last 28 years. Don (Bruce) gave the eulogy for the family, and you all would have been very proud of him as he did a masterful job of paying tribute to his father. Don paid tribute to his dad?s faith and love for God and his family. It could not have been better said. Representatives from the larger Scottish Community in Minnesota were there ? from clans Stuart, Cameron, Kincaid, MacMillan, Donald, etc. A lone piper (Mike Breidenbach) concluded the service, standing by the Bruce Tartan Flag. After the service, a luncheon was provided at Joseph?s Grill nearby the church, Roy & Dorothy?s favorite. My guess is that about 250 persons attended the services. I am personally going to miss Roy a great deal. He was always so very supportive and encouraging to me. God bless his memory. Thanks be to God for the kinship we experience in the larger Family Of Bruce. "We have been, we are, we shall be ? BRUCE." Regards to all, William & Phyllis Bruce David Gregory Gatewood, Died October 10 from complications of surgery for cardiac disease. Born 1939 in Stewartville, MN to Mary Elizabeth Gregory & Ruel Gatewood, David was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Donna, and his children, Todd and Jenna. He is survived by his brother, Ruel and sister-in-law Doris Gatewood of Appleton, WI; his former wife, La?l Gatewood of St. Paul; his daughter, Deirdre and son-in-law Mark Smith and their daughter Jasmine of Greenville, WI; and his longtime friend, Lyn Lacy of Minneapolis. Trained with BA and MEd degrees in Education, Dave was an elementary school teacher for 32 years in south Minneapolis and proprietor of Station 17 Book Store in the same Powderhorn neighborhood. To help support his family, he had also been an Army Sergeant at Fort Carson CO, a Fuller Brush salesman in southeast Minneapolis, and a Minneapolis Park Board policeman at Lake Nokomis. Before and during retirement, he doted on his granddaughter, read voraciously, collected Native American art, and enjoyed boating with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, traveling through the US, especially to the Black Hills, target shooting with buddies at his southeastern rural cabin, and pursuing his Scottish heritage with a trip to Scotland and participation in Scottish fairs with Clan Gregor. A military ceremony of commitment with bagpipe and drum will be held on Thursday, October 26 at 10 AM at Fort Snelling, followed by a memorial service at Epiphany Lutheran Church at 1414 E 48th St., Minneapolis at 11:30 AM. An informal lunch with time for celebration and socialization will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to his favorite enterprises or to the David G. Gatewood Media Room, Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association, 821 E. 35th St, Minneapolis 55407. Published in the Star Tribune on 10/15/2006. _Guest Book_ (http://www.legacy.com/startribune/GuestBook.asp?Page=GuestBook&PersonID=19554615) David represented Clan Gregor for many years with MCSC and was also their "Haggis Speaker" in the days when MCSC hosted a Ceilidh the night before the Mac Fair. David's interest in all things Scottish never waned but his book store kept him from active participation in recent times. He will be missed by all of us who knew him. 3. National Politics with a Minnesota Connection Our most recent National elections had many seekers of power around the country holding their cumulative breaths over the outcome of several very close races. One in particular had a Minnesota Connection of which you may not have been aware. In the senate race in the state of Virginia, a very close race was "fought" between incumbent Senator George Allen, son of the former owner of the Washington Redskins, and a Marine veteran, former Navy Secretary, former Republican, and best selling author, Jim Webb. If there was something familiar looking about the young challenger and eventual winner - you may have noticed the cheeks, the hairline, the stature; you may have scratched your head wondering, as I did, "Who is this guy? He looks so familiar." And then it came to me. This young man, staunchly against the current policy in Iraq, where his young son, Jimmy, is currently serving with the Marine Corps is none other than the brother of Gary Webb, St. Andrew's Society Piper, and Pipe Major of several Shrine Pipe Bands in our area. Gary has confirmed that the new Senator-elect from the state of Virginia is indeed his brother Jim, whose election tipped the power scales in favor of the democrats in the U. S. Senate. Recently, Senator-elect Webb made the news again as a result of a brief (4 sentences) conversation with President Bush at a reception for those newly elected to the House and Senate. The AP offers a good telling of the incident at this web (no pun intended) location: _http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/29/webb.bush.ap/index.html_ (http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/29/webb.bush.ap/index.html) Gary reports that he did quite a bit of piping on election night, piping in his brother and also piping in a contingent of his brother's fellow Marine veterans as a surprise. A busy time for our SAS piper and I am guessing just the beginning of a busy schedule for the next six years ? at least. 6. Merlin's Rest update: We are all set to go with our new pub but, alas, the mills of local government grind exceeding slow. By current estimation, we should have all of the necessary paperwork passed and permits in our hands by mid-to-late January 2007. We are looking forward to being open for a braw bash on Rabbie Burns Night. Scot's Wha' Hae ... Bill Watkins STAY TUNED! 7. AND IN CLOSING When a pre-Thanksgiving caution of Moderation in all things was offered to certain of my Scottish friends, Steve Kincaid responded thusly, "One of my favorite writer/philosophers (Robert Heinlein) once said (through the persona of Lazarus Long), "Moderation is for monks; take big bites!" I've always liked the variant, "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!" And dear Mary McKinley replied, "Moderation is for wussies - excess in everything!" Next time I'll bite my tongue.
