From BabsFayth at aol.com Mon Jan 29 16:32:36 2007 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 16:32:36 EST Subject: [Scottish News] ****SPAM**** (This is NOT SPAM) Scottish News in Minnesota Vol. 7, No. 65, February 1, 2007 Message-ID: Hello Everyone Well, dear old sod, Rabbie Burns was celebrated in style from one end of Minnesota to the other. Burns Night celebrations as far north as Duluth, south as Rochester, and two celebrations in the Twin Cities area drew large crowds of happy Scots with plenty to celebrate. Haggis speakers Jack A. Barker, Joe McNee, and David Sinclair Bouschor did the bard proud, and the haggis later served up, at least at the two events this editor attended, was the best I ever had. Now for the shocking news: Cameron Goodrich of Thistle Rose who provided the haggis, says it came from a can! ! ! Caledonian Kitchens. Well sign me up for a testimonial. David Michaelson and I practically came to fisticuffs over who was going to get the last wee bit in the bottom of the bowl. Great fun all around. Good music, good food, good friends, and lots of great dancing. St. Andrew's, Twin Cities Scottish Club, and Minnesota Police Pipe Band all benefited from the silent auctions. Who could ask for anything more? As Sherry Ladig, director of Night Scotsman, Dunquin, and Thistledown commented, "I've been doing Scottish music since 1981, and in my opinion the last five years or so have been the best for good spirits and good times in our community." Ain't it the truth. "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" Here's where it the fun starts ? and it starts as early as FRIDAY: COMING EVENTS - For details scroll down the page 1. Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games ? GREAT NEWS! ! ! >From Liz Michaelson, Vice President MSGHG The Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games announces its selection as a recipient of a $3000 Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) grant. MSFHG VP Liz Michaelson applied on behalf of the board for this grant to enhance the musical offerings at the May 19, 2007 Fair. Included as part of the grant is funding to improve the already outstanding accessibility at the Fair. At least one American Sign Language interpreter will be provided in the music/education tent in the center of the clan area. Already booked for the Fair are Piper's Crow, Thistledown, and Ross Sutter. Negotiations are underway to bring in a national group whose work incorporates both traditional Scottish music and a more contemporary sound. Through the efforts of Ross Sutter, we will have the pleasure of a visit from the incredible Norman Kennedy. Many will remember his past visits to the Twin Cities a number of years ago and may have participated in one of his "wool waulking" sessions. This is a not to be missed piece of our heritage that you may never have the opportunity to observe or participate in again. Wool waulking is the traditional method of "sizing" loosely woven wool fabric by rhythmically moving the moistened wool from person to person around a large table to the beat of traditional Gaelic songs. This reduces the yardage in both width and length, making it quite water and wind resistant. Local weavers will be providing the fabric for the waulking, which will be set up under a tent in the living history area of the Fair. Learn more about Norman and wool waulking at _www.fssgb.org/kennedy.html_ (http://www.fssgb.org/kennedy.html) These performances and activities are made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council from a grant by the McKnight Foundation and appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature. The MSFHG 2007 Fair brochures are available for distribution. We encourage everyone to stop by the Fair exhibit at Scottish Ramble to pick up a batch & get them out to family, friends, co-workers, the local pub or . . . . . If you have some extra time at Scottish Ramble the Fair Board would appreciate your help in labeling, sealing and stamping flyers for mailing. Stop by the exhibit table and offer to lend a hand. Also available at Scottish Ramble are admission tickets, T-shirts and prior years' limited edition goblets, pilsners, and mugs. _http://www.mnscottishfair.org/_ (http://www.mnscottishfair.org/) Click on Volunteer and let them know you want to help. 3. News from Laura MacKenzie We had a good Burns celebration over in Sioux Falls - but they wanted a change from the usual dinner with entertainment - so, it was held in a lovely old theater, with pipe band and Pipers Crow sets on stage, plus recitations - a vat of warm haggis was in the lobby, bowls included in the ticket price! Please go to my schedule page for February and March events: _www.lauramackenzie.com/schedule.html_ (http://www.lauramackenzie.com/schedule.html) The ones on St. Pats are very Irish - all the others are Scots relevant! 8. A Scottish Invasion ? Uncle Angus Needs YOU! ! ! >From the Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative April 1st-5th ? Scottish Invasions! Over the course of the week between the Tartan Day Celebration at the state capitol on March 31st and Tartan Day on April 6, all of the Scottish organizations in the state and anyone with Scottish blood (or enthusiasm) are encouraged to organize outings to promote Tartan Day and to honor their Scottish heritage by wearing tartan ?in public.? The Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative is suggesting that small groups of tartan-clad people go out to dinner, go shopping at the mall, or go to church or any other every day type of activity while wearing tartan. If anyone asks, tell them about Tartan Day, your organization, the Scottish Fair, and/or any other Scottish cultural aspect you wish to talk about and that they might want to hear about. We are not suggesting that you seek out people with whom to talk. Simply talk to anyone who has the nerve to ask why you are there and wearing tartan. This is an opportunity for us to tell the entire state that the Scottish community is alive, well, and happy to be here and to let everyone know that it isn?t just lutefisk, lefsa, and hot dish that makes this state great! (Haggis counts, too!) Here's an idea ? Stop by the Tartan Day/Scottish News in Minnesota table at the Ramble and pick up a few extra Tartan Day buttons ($1 donation) to keep in your pocket. When someone asks, "What's Tartan Day?" You can tell them and give them a button to remember. Tremendous public relations and only costs a buck. (All proceeds from Tartan Day button donations go to help pay for Tartan Day Events.) April 6th, 2007 ? Tartan Day ? WEAR your Tartan Day. All Scots and those who honor our shared heritage are encouraged to wear your tartan on this day. Also see the March 31st Tartan Day Celebration information below! 9. Tartan Day Celebration Events Information >From the Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative March 31st 2007 ? Tartan Day Celebrations! Please mark this date on your calendars and plan to attend and participate in the 9th Annual Tartan Day Celebration on the Minnesota State Capitol steps. This year?s celebration is early, because April 6, the official date for Tartan Day, occurs on Good Friday. The Grand Parade of Scots will march from the Veterans Service Building north to the capitol steps at 3:00 PM (line-up begins at 2:30; bring your Tartan flags and your organization flags, if you have them). At the capitol steps, there will be a brief program and presentation of the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award. Everyone is invited to participate in the parade. Detailed information will be sent to each of the state?s Scottish organizations for their use and for distribution to their members. For anyone not associated with any official organization, the MN Tartan Day Cooperative will be providing more details in the March SNIM. You can also visit the MN Tartan Day website for more information: _www.tartandaymn.org_ (http://www.tartandaymn.org/) ? click on NEWS. Following the parade and program at the capitol, everyone is invited to a Scottish Supper and Ceilidh at the Columbia Manor, located at 3300 Central Avenue in NE Minneapolis. (Check _www.mapquest.com_ (http://www.mapquest.com/) for directions) A social hour and silent auction begins at 5:00 p.m., with supper following at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $28 per adult, $20 for children (12 and under). There will be planned presentations and performances, as well as time for visiting and enjoying the evening. This is a casual, family oriented celebration. Spontaneity is welcomed and appreciated, so feel free to stand up and join in by singing, piping, dancing, or telling a story. (Let's make this a true Scottish Ceilidh.) A silent auction to benefit this and future Tartan Day events will also take place. Casual Scottish attire is encouraged, but not required. Reservations are necessary. You can purchase tickets at the Ramble at the Tartan Day/Scottish News in Minnesota table (February 10 ? 11). Check the Tartan Day web site for ticket availability and for updates on featured performers, dinner options, and information on how to donate to the silent auction. _www.tartandaymn.org_ (http://www.tartandaymn.org/) click on NEWS 10.
