From BabsFayth at aol.com Wed Feb 14 17:33:36 2007 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 17:33:36 EST Subject: [Scottish News] (THIS IS NOT SPAM) EXTRA! EXTRA! SCOTTISH AMERICAN CENTER OPENS FRIDAY Message-ID: Hello Everyone The Scottish American Center and Heritage Resource will open to the public for the first time on Friday, February 16, 2007 at noon! This should set off great cheering and extended applause on the part of all those who bare some allegiance to the Scottish Community of Minnesota and to their Scottish heritage. Every since I first became immersed in all things Scottish almost twelve years ago, I have heard talk about a Scottish Heritage Center. Certainly, the late lamented Rod MacRae was one of those who talked the most about such a project, but he wasn't able to move his idea forward. Scott McKechnie stopped talking and started doing. And what he did is the beginnings of a project that will reach far into our future as we delve into our past. The Scottish American Center (or SAC as it's being called, fitting right in there with the rest of our Scottish Alphabet Soup, SAS, MCSC, TCSC, RSCDS, MSCDA, MPPB) is in its infancy. Like a newborn when it receives the attention and care it needs, it's going to grow big and strong. And that's where you, as the surrogate god-parents of this infant come in. Here is the story up 'til now. Scott has leased a space in the 151 office building (151 Silver Lake Road, New Brighton) where he has a small office and a reception/public area that he has outfitted with colorful display boards holding photos, maps, genealogy information and other Scottish items of interest. Like any new parent, Scott has a wish list. Now if he could go to Target and register and put all of his needs into their computer he would, but the things he needs, Target doesn't sell. He needs books, all those Scottish books that have been gathering dust on your shelves for years and are opened once every two or three years ? offer them to Scott. If he doesn't need them, he'll let you know. He needs photos, photos of your Scottish ancestors or historical places in Scotland you have taken ? bring a small copy to Scott, if it's what he is looking for then you can have in enlarged, framed in a gold or dark wooden frame (nothing fancy ? Wal-Mart, K-Mart will do) and Scott will find a place for it. He needs cash. Anyone's picture will do: U. S. Grant would be great, but even Washington, Lincoln, or Franklin will do nicely. And checks are good to. Any amount. Make them out to Scottish American Center and send them to Scottish American Center, 151 Silver Lake Road, New Brighton, MN 55112. What has been accomplished thus far has been on Scott's nickel and in order to continue he will need financial support from us. Another thing Scott needs urgently ? from you ? is your time. In the beginning Scott will attend the SAC on Wednesdays from noon 'til 5:00 p.m., 6:00 ? 8:00 p.m. and Fridays noon to 6:00 p.m. Starting this Friday, February 16 you are welcome to visit the SAC during those hours. Beginning April 1, Scott would like to expand the hours the SAC is open to the public. In order to do that he will need volunteer attendants. Barbara Humphrey is serving as Volunteer Coordinator. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new venture, please email Babs at _babsfayth at aol.com_ (mailto:babsfayth at aol.com) . An informational, training session will be held in late March to help acquaint you with the SAC and to outline your responsibilities as a "docent" at the Scottish American Center. Don't be frighten off. It's easy. If you have staffed a tent at the Scottish Fair or a table at the Ramble, you will be able to do this. And even if you haven't had those experiences, we'll show you how. In addition to the books, photos, money, and time listed above, on Scott's wish list are a few small, but comfortable chairs for the display area; a lightweight collapsible display table and folding chairs for board meetings. People with special skills: a web site designer to help him spiff up the SAC web site, people with creative skills to help design display surfaces, input on displays, woodworkers with tools and space to help with construction of display cases, and something Scott didn't mention, a new computer. The one he is currently using is Windows 98. (enough said) Along those lines, Scott would like to talk with someone who has a strong background in Scottish Genealogy who might be interested in conducting some genealogy workshops and orientation meetings later in the spring. If your organization would like to invite Scott to give a presentation on the SAC, drop him an email at _SACandHR at prodigy.net_ (mailto:SACandHR at prodigy.net) or call the SAC at 651-636-1558. Scott has voice mail on the phone, so call and leave a message. A great way to introduce your membership to the SAC would be to hold your board meetings there with time for the members to look at the amazing collection Scott has put together. Give him a call, drop him a line. This is YOUR Scottish American Center and Heritage Resource. It's continuation, it's longevity, will depend on you. Watch it grow, with your help. And infant now, a toddler by Tartan Day, and who knows what the future will hold. It's in your hands. Twin Cities Scottish Club ? Ceilidh dancing will no longer continue. It is with a heavy heart that we pass on the news that the TCSC has discontinued it Friday night Ceilidh dancing lessons. Eileen Stewart, who along with husband Doug, has tried valiantly to keep the dancing going in George McCracken's memory, as it was so important to him. But alas and alack, there comes a time to say goodbye to a long held tradition. And for TCSC that time has come. Should Ceilidh dancing be resumed some time in the future, you will hear about it here. Thanks to Doug and Eileen for keeping it going as long as they did. George would be proud. 4. Previously, Daylight Savings Time began on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October. The new rules are the second Sunday in March (Spring ahead), and the first Sunday in November (Fall Back). For 2007, the Daylight Savings Time goes into effect Sunday, March 11 and ends on Sunday, November 4, both at 2 a.m. local time. 2. A Tease. . . Realized. The Scottish American Center is OPEN! Last month, in this space, we teased about something big coming. Having received the EXTRA! Special Edition, you now know that the something big is the Scottish American Center and Heritage Resource (SAC). Many people talked over the years about our need in this community for a Scottish American Center. Scott McKechnie stopped talking and started doing. As promised, the SAC opened to the public on February 16. The current schedule calls for the Center to be open on Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. and 6:00 ? 8:00 p.m., Fridays from noon to 6:00 p.m. Expanded hours will begin on or about April 1. Please check the Coming Events column for information on volunteering as guest hosts at the SAC. Scott McKechnie is a well-known figure in our Scottish Community having served as MN commissioner for Clan Donald and now Regional Commissioner. He has been a member of the Board of Governors for SAS (wife Bobbi has also served SAS as Secretary), a supportive member of TCSC, and his clan representative to MCSC. A year ago, he was elected a Fellow in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and thereby entitled to list FSA Scot after his name. You may have met him at the recent Scottish Ramble where he hosted an exhibit describing the SAC and his plans located at the MCSC table. Scott is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, currently serving in a reduced capacity while he gets the Scottish American Center under way. Scott and his beautiful bride, Bobbi, were married on the Isle of Skye in April 2001. To this point, the SAC has been totally funded by Scott and Bobbi with appreciated contributions from the members of MCSC, SAS and others. The costs are ongoing and here is how you can help. At the top of Scott's wish list - contributions to keep the SAC up and running. No amount is too small, or too large. SAC will be 501 c 3 by the end of the year, so your contributions will be tax deductible. (Make checks payable to J. Scott McKechnie and a receipt will be sent to you from SAC. See end of article for address of SAC.) In addition, Scott will accept books, photos, memorabilia, weapons, and decorative items (and a newer computer). He is currently housing the MCSC library, and has received many wonderful photographs from Jackie and Denny Johnston. Don and Nancy Mikitta donated 6 chairs and a wonderful mannequin now draped in a great kilt. Thanks to everyone who has brought items to the SAC. All are appreciated and most welcomed. And help. Scott needs help. While he has been able to launch this project virtually single handedly, he needs help. Staff ? to handle inquiry emails, web site designing and maintaining, woodworker to build simple display items, creative helpers to design displays. Scott needs you. Very soon, Scott will be assembling an Advisory Board and an Executive Board to help with the day to day decisions necessary to not only keep the SAC going today, but growing for the future. Things like SAC membership, programs, and community outreach will be discussed. The SAC web site will be up and running very soon ? _www.scottishamericancenter.org_ (http://www.scottishamericancenter.org/) ? check it out. You want to be a part of this exciting venture. As a community, we owe a great debt to Scott for initiating this important project. The success is up to us ? you ? me ? all of us. What can you do? The Scottish American Center and Heritage Resource is located on the lower level (follow the signs) of the 151 office building. The address is 151 Silver Lake Road NW, Suite 13, New Brighton, MN 55112 ? just 4 blocks south of the intersection of I694 and Silver Lake Road on the east side. The Center phone number is 651-636-1558 and there is voice mail. If you are the editor of an organization newsletter, we encourage you to use any or all of this information in a forthcoming issue. Scott would be happy to be interviewed for your newsletter. Just call the center, leave a message if he's not there and he will get back to you. You are at the center of the SAC's success. Scottish organization presidents and chairpersons: introduce your board (and thereby your membership) to the SAC by holding a board meeting in the Display Room. Call the center to make arrangements. 651-636-1558 3. Presidential Proclamation of Tartan Day Waiting to hear. 4. Rampant Scotland, the largest directory of Scottish Links ? Still the Best Rampant Scotland - the largest directory of Scottish links! _http://www.RampantScotland.com_ (http://www.rampantscotland.com/) Also with 2000+ illustrated feature articles! _http://www.RampantScotland.com/features.htm_ (http://www.rampantscotland.com/features.htm) NEWS Details 1. Come home to Eilean Dubh. Aye, it was a brisk, mid-winter evening, as it has been for the five years now that we have been making this pilgrimage to Eilean Dubh. And what a gloriously well-rewarded pilgrimage it was. Sherry Ladig along with her Dunquin musicians, special guest - that Celtic Music Wizard Laura Mackenzie, transported us to the wee island and left us enchanted. It was SRO in the parish house of the Eilean's favorite Kirk. More chairs and more chairs were brought in to accommodate the overflow crowd. So many new faces, dear faces of friends, and many folks from the immediate neighborhoods filled the place with their enthusiasm. Intermission in the musical program signaled the serving of the incredible sweets and savories prepared for us by Joy and Jim Gullickson. Och, what a night! Must we really wait another year until Eilean Dubh rises again? Thanks to all who make this annual event a highlight of our Scottish year. 2. Hats off to Liz and Peggy for a grand Scottish Ramble. Among our blessings and high on the list, we must count Liz Michaelson and her daughter Peggy Lushine. Thanks to their tireless efforts, A Scottish Ramble just keeps getting better and better. The programs, both those on the main stage and those "above stairs" were wonderful. The vendors reported, almost to a man (ooops, woman, too), great sales, and lots of interest. With a half dozen clans and organizations on the second floor along with Clann Tartan, interest was brisk as Ramble goers discovered the many levels of Scottish Culture. (yes, pun intended). Thanks to everyone who participated, MPPB, MSCDA, SAS, TCSC, Clann Tartan, the performing groups, the clans, the Scottish organizations, the vendors, and what was probably the largest Kirkin' o' the Tartans in the history of St. Andrew's Society (Bill Gilchrist, piper). Another Community Author announces book publication. "Remember me? Scotty Roberts formerly with Three Celts & Company, 42nd Highland Regiment, Stirling Renaissance Faire...?" You bet we do. And now add author to that list. Scotty's book, The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare - a young reader's, fully illustrated chapter book, just landed a major publishing contract, and will be available in May. Synopsis: Tam O'Hare, Irish Lord and swashbuckling adventurer, along with his young Scottish squire, Horatio MacNutt, set out to find a young girl who's been stolen by the faeries - the "Good People" of Irish and Scottish lore. The young girl is the granddaughter of Tam's Great Uncle, Argyll Whitebeard, chieftain of the clan MacDervish in the highlands of Scotland. Through the course of their quest, Tam and Horatio encounter several figures from history - mostly due to Tam's reputation as an aristocratic adventurer - Mary Queen of Scots and her husband James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell; Queen Elizabeth, John Knox and several minor characters. There are pirates, sea battles, royalty, romance, spirituality, and high adventure throughout the entire story. While spinning a fanciful, fun tale, the book speaks of honor, sacrifice, history, and spirituality, all on a level that has been highly appealing to grade school children, as well as high school age teens and adults. The characters, as mentioned above, are anthropomorphized. The Irish and Scots are rabbits, squirrels, badgers, beavers, and bears, while the English are hawks, foxes, wolves, and ferrets. The clothing in the illustrations, as well as the geographic locations, ships, castles, and towns are all true to their history, lending great appeal to the illustrations. * * * The prologue and some of the illustrations can be viewed at Scotty's personal web site by going to _http://www.taverntent.com/tamtext.html_ (http://www.taverntent.com/tamtext.html) The official www.tamohare.com site is presently under construction, and should be completed within the week. Best of luck with this wonderful project, Scotty. The illustrations are absolutely magnificent. Methinks this is not just a book for children but for those of us currently in our second (or third) childhoods, as well. Hope to see some copies at the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games in May. 5. Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games ? GREAT NEWS! ! ! Minnesota Scottish & Celtic Dance Association (MSCDA) New President Email President Kristy Van Hoven at _dancingthistle at mail.com_ (mailto:dancingthistle at mail.com) A wee bit about Kristy: I am delighted to be chosen to lead the Minnesota Scottish Celtic Dance Association in this exciting time. I am hoping to see our dancers and teachers succeed in sharing their talents with the Scottish community in Minnesota and abroad. I have been a dancer my whole life and took on highland dancing at the age of 11(one is never too old to start!) after an exciting trip to "Guthrie Country," Scotland. I have competed and performed throughout the United States and Scotland. In 2005, I added teaching to my busy dance schedule. I get a big delight seeing my students' progress with their own dancing. I have enjoyed all the opportunities I have had to meet dancers and parents through the years and look forward to meeting new families interested in Scottish dancing and MSCDA. If anyone needs help finding instruction (we have some up and coming teachers looking for some experiences, as well as experienced teachers), dancers for a special event or want answers about highland dancing please visit the MSCDA website: _http://www.slantsixstudios.com/mscda/index.htm_ (http://www.slantsixstudios.com/mscda/index.htm) . We hope many of you will join us for up coming performances at the Scottish Fair, May 19, the Festival of Nations, May 5, and we are hoping to make an appearance at the Tartan Day Celebration, March 31! - Kristy Van Hoven 9. Scottish Invasions! Over the course of the week between the Tartan Day Celebration at the state capitol on March 31 and Tartan Day on April 6, all of the Scottish organizations in the state and anyone with Scottish blood (or enthusiasm) are encouraged to organize outings to promote Tartan Day and to honor their Scottish heritage by wearing tartan ?in public.? The Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative is suggesting that small groups of tartan-clad people go out to dinner, go shopping at the mall, or go to church or any other every day type of activity while wearing tartan. If anyone asks, tell them about Tartan Day, your organization, the Scottish Fair, and/or any other Scottish cultural aspect you wish to talk about and that they might want to hear about. We are not suggesting that you seek out people with whom to talk. Simply talk to anyone who has the nerve to ask why you are there and wearing tartan. This is an opportunity for us to tell the entire state that the Scottish community is alive, well, and happy to be here and to let everyone know that it isn?t just lutefisk, lefsa, and hot dish that makes this state great! (Haggis counts, too!) April 6th, 2007 ? Tartan Day ? WEAR your Tartan Day. All Scots and those who honor our shared heritage are encouraged to wear your tartan on this day. Also see the March 31 Tartan Day Celebration information below! 12. Tartan Day Celebration Events Information From the Minnesota Tartan Day Cooperative March 31, 2007 ? Tartan Day Celebrations! Please mark this date on your calendars and plan to attend and participate in the 9th Annual Tartan Day Celebration on the Minnesota State Capitol steps. This year?s celebration is early, because April 6, the official date for Tartan Day, occurs on Good Friday. The Grand Parade of Scots will march from the Veterans Service Building north to the capitol steps at 3:00 PM (line-up begins at 2:30; bring your Tartan flags and your organization flags, if you have them). At the capitol steps, there will be a brief program and presentation of the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award. Everyone is invited to participate in the parade. Detailed information will be sent to each of the state?s Scottish organizations for their use and for distribution to their members. Whether or not your are associated with any official organization, the MN Tartan Day Cooperative welcomes you, your family, friends, neighbors to participate in this important celebration of our Scottish Heritage. You can also visit the MN Tartan Day website for more information: _www.tartandaymn.org_ (http://www.tartandaymn.org/) ? click on NEWS. Given that this event is happening on a Saturday, the parking meters in the capitol environs should be free. Operative word there is should. Wouldn't hurt to have some quarters in your sporran, just in case. Parking in the driveway just at the foot of the capitol steps is restricted to permit holders, so don't count on that. Parking in the lots along 12th and at the meters on John Ireland Blvd should be plentiful. Following the parade and program at the capitol, everyone is invited to a Scottish Supper and Ceilidh at the Columbia Manor, located at 3300 Central Avenue in NE Minneapolis. (Check _www.mapquest.com_ (http://www.mapquest.com/) for directions) A social hour and silent auction begins at 5:00 p.m., with supper following at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $28 per adult, $15 for children ? note price reduction (12 and under). There will be planned presentations and performances, as well as time for visiting and enjoying the evening. This is a casual, family oriented celebration. Spontaneity is welcomed and appreciated, so feel free to stand up and join in by singing, piping, dancing, or telling a story. (Let's make this a true Scottish Ceilidh.) Bring those guitars, fiddles, accordions, pipes, what have you, step up, and entertain at this great Tartan Day Ceilidh. A silent auction to benefit this and future Tartan Day events will also take place. The proceeds from the Silent Auction will help with Tartan Day expenses. If you have items, you would like to contribute to the Silent Auction, please contact Jack MacMillan at _jacmacm at aol.com_ (mailto:jacmacm at aol.com) . AND IN CLOSING As Chinese New Year is celebrated and we enter into the year of the Pig (Boar) (1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007) I would like to send special greetings to my fellow piggies. According to Chinese Zodiac, piggies are chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength. For Boar (Pig) Year people, there is no left or right and there is no retreat. They have tremendous fortitude and great honesty. They don't make many friends but they make them for life, and anyone having a Boar Year friend is fortunate for they are extremely loyal. They don't talk much but have a great thirst for knowledge. They study a great deal and are generally well informed. Boar people are quick tempered, yet they hate arguments and quarreling. They are kind to their loved ones. No matter how bad problems seem to be, Boar people try to work them out, honestly if sometimes impulsively. They are most compatible with Rabbits and Sheep. Well, ain't that the truth? Anybody know any eligible Rabbits or Sheep? Happy New Year Everyone.
