From BabsFayth at aol.com Thu Apr 12 10:09:03 2007 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 10:09:03 EDT Subject: [Scottish News] Special Edition - Great Scots Needs Your Help Message-ID: Hello Everyone, You recall as a Post Script in the last edition of the SNIM I mentioned that I would be sending you a Special Edition - this is it. Our good friend Jackie Johnston, who you may remember as the Coordinator of the Minnesota Tartan Project, has been researching a book on Great Scots of Minnesota. She has been at it for five years and has come to the point in her work where she needs our/your help. Below you will find Jackie's note and the list of potential Scots of Minnesota origin that she needs help with. She will greatly appreciate any help and time you can give to this project and assures me you will be properly credited. Please reply directly to Jackie at: _jackiejohnston at mchsi.com_ (mailto:jackiejohnston at mchsi.com) Dear Readers of the SNIM, I have been researching the Scots and Scotch-Irish in Minnesota and their history for five years but I have found it is impossible to do the genealogy on every possible Scot so I am asking for your help. I have prepared a list of possible Scots or Scotch-Irish and I am asking people to go through the list and send me any information you might have on any of these people that will confirm they are of Scottish descent or information stating they are not. I am hoping that there may be people out there that either know the person if living, know the family or have information on the person from a historical source or newspaper. These last names all appear in Tartan For Me but they may not be Scottish as there are several Scandinavian names in there and many names could be English, Welsh, Irish or something other than Scottish. I have also learned that the name alone doesn't confirm ethnicity. For instance, the Andrews Sisters who grew up in Mound were actually Greek and the name was Andrios. Judy Garlands real name was Frances Gumm. The Judy Garland Museum told me she was not Scottish but a 1952 interview done in Scotland revealed that she was indeed of Scottish descent. Her grandfather on her mother's side was from Scotland. His last name was Milne. Many names were changed when people migrated to the United States or they changed it for business reasons or for a stage name. So I can't rely on name alone. I need some other indication that the person is Scottish. The following list does not contain a lot of information. I found all these people on the Internet so you can Google any for more information or email me. I did not find any information on these people to indicate their ethnicity on the Internet. I don't have any memberships for the genealogy sites. If you have any information on these people, please email me at _jackiejohnston at mchsi.com_ (mailto:jackiejohnston at mchsi.com) . Please state your source for the information even if it was a discussion with the person or a member of the family. I have a pretty good list of those I have identified as Scottish or Scotch-Irish. I do have a few on that list that I am assuming they are Scottish because the name originated in Scotland. It is very difficult to research people who are living because of privacy issues. They have unlisted numbers and emails. It is very difficult to get through to them. I have emailed a few people who are living and did not receive a reply. But I did get some positive replies as well and was able to confirm a few people who are now on my other list of confirmed Scots. Be sure to sign your name so I can properly credit you in the book as helping with the research. Please see the list below. Yours Aye, Jackie Johnston Author of Great Scots! Not so unlike us humans, those cardinals, eh? The first bud on the front yard apple tree burst open this morning and I am guessing in less than a week's time, the entire tree will be a riot of pink and white blossoms buzzing with bees. (I've started calling it a crash course in Irish culture as we have a literature overview class, a history overview, a language class, a ceili dance class, a tin whistle class and a "traveling to Ireland as a family" seminar) There is a ceili on Friday, June 22, a concert on Saturday, June 23 and culminates in a master-student recital on Sunday, June 24. Most events are happening at McNally-Smith College and the St. Paul Conservatory of Music - in the old science museum building in downtown St Paul. We're bringing in James Kelly, Fintan Vallely and Tommy Martin to join our local super stars Paddy O'Brien and Daithi Sproule for a unique, family-friendly, non-competitive event. Many members of the local Irish music community are involved in the weekend as well. Lots of info is available on our website at _www.centerforirishmusic.org_ (http://www.centerforirishmusic.org/) We have an early registration deadline of April 1 after which the cost increases slightly. The public programming has no registration limit at this time but we are only able to accomodate up to 100 young students this first year. (People can register until we are full, but the sooner the better. And they get a discount if they register before April 1.) Though this event focuses on IRISH music - do you think any of the members of your organization, would be interested in attending such an event? Would you let your members know about it? I can send you some information in the mail that you can distribute or display for your group. Or perhaps you have a newsletter where you can broadcast this info? Or on your website? This is a great opportunity for many people as it doesn't require an extended commitment, only a weekend - they can just come and give it a try - find out a lot about Irish culture. It works for kids and families and interested adults. All are welcome. I think this will be a great community-building event. We hope to be able to offer it annually right here in the Twin Cities - bringing more great Irish music to our towns. With thanks, Kate Dowling, Executive Director, The Center for Irish Music, PO Box 7034 St. Paul, MN 55107 651-493-2022 _irish.music at comcast.net_ (mailto:irish.music at comcast.net) _www.centerforirishmusic.org_ (http://www.centerforirishmusic.org/) ON GOING EVENTS (We have checked these events and to the best of our knowledge, they are "okay." Twin Cities Scottish Club - Ceilidh dancing will no longer continue. It is with a heavy heart that we pass on the news that the TCSC has discontinued it Friday night Ceilidh dancing lessons. Eileen Stewart, who along with husband Doug, has tried valiantly to keep the dancing going in George McCracken's memory, as it was so important to him. But alas and alack, there comes a time to say goodbye to a long held tradition. And for TCSC that time has come. Should Ceilidh dancing be resumed some time in the future, you will hear about it here. Thanks to Doug and Eileen for keeping it going as long as they did. George would be proud. 4. The Scottish American Center needs you. Volunteer now. It's easy, it's fun, and you will be exposed to the largest collection of books on Scotland in the state. Bill Cady and Jerolene Sturgis Wetters Fournier >From the Minneapolis Star Tribune: Bill Cady, age 54, of Brooklyn Park, MN, formerly of Winona, MN, left the building unexpectedly and without permission on April 6, 2007. Bill was owner of Cady's Handy Services. He was a kind and generous son, father, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle, coach and friend. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, even total strangers, and he gave away much more than he sold. Bill loved to sing and write songs and he turned down offers to tour with rock + roll bands in the 1970's in order to stay at home and be a fulltime single father. He loved children, football, corny jokes, cats and music, and he was determined to do it his way. Bill loved everyone and everyone loved him, he was our hero and our coach and out friend. Bill is survived by his broken-hearted family: wife, Kathy Stipe; sons, Damian Cady, David Hudek and Shawn Whitney; daughters-in-law, Gina Bianchi Cady and Loriann Bowman Whitney; six grandchildren, Cheyenne, Mariah and Tristan Cady + Natalie, Liam and Luke Whitney; brothers, Mitchell, Richard, Dennis and Geno; sisters, Rosemary, Amy and Sonia; mother-in-law, Mary Stipe and her family; many nieces and nephews, and dozens of friends who were very important to him. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Amy Ivarie Cady; and his beloved sister, Patty Cole. Those closest to Bill know that he never recovered from these losses. Bill is now singing with those angels he didn't believe in, and Kosha and Kato are purring around his feet. To everyone reading this, please remember: alcohol is a depressant. Memorial service will be held soon. >From the Duluth News Tribune: Jerolene Sturgis Wetters Fournier, 104, died April 24, 2007 at Bayshore Health Center, Duluth, where she has resided for the last several years. PRESIDENT BUSH RECOGNIZES TARTAN DAY! But no proclamation signed yet! A message was sent to Bob Murdoch (leading the national Tartan Day organization) from President Bush. Due to strange restrictions on publishing materials sent out from the White House without their permission, Bob has paraphrased the message for us. The message is directed to all of those celebrating Tartan Day. Reference is made to what the spirit and character of Scottish Americans has meant to the cultural fabric of our nation. He mentions that the Scots were among the first settlers and that their talent, faith, and firm values helped establish America as a place of freedom and opportunity and states that Scottish Americans continue to strengthen America today. President Bush refers to Tartan Day as providing an opportunity to celebrate our heritage, traditions and culture "and to honor the many ways Americans of Scottish ancestry have enriched our national experience." President Bush and his wife join in extending their best wishes for "an enjoyable celebration." Further to this message from Bob, we understand that a proclamation is waiting for formal signing and recognition, but due to the bureaucracy of the proclamation system, it is in a stack with many other orphaned documents. It is important to realize that the President did make the effort to send a message and, although informally, did recognize the contributions Scottish American?s have made on our great nation. 10. Are you ready for some adventure? Swashbuckling action? Pirates? High seas battles? How about a little history, romance, and haunting Celtic mysticism thrown into the mix? If so, you have GOT to get yourself a copy of "The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare," the new book by author/illustrator, Scotty Roberts. Scotty will be signing his book, "The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare" at this year's Scottish Fair on Saturday, May 19th!! You can find Scotty at the Three Celts & Company booth. His supply of books will be limited, so stop by early. For those of you who are not familiar with Scotty's book, "The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare," it is an anthropomorphized (giving human attributes to animals) tale set in 1567 Scotland, Ireland, and England. The book was originally intended for young readers, but is so sophisticated and detailed in it's scope and tone, that it has found wide appeal with adults. The story revolves around Tam O'Hare, Irish Lord from County Meath, who is searching for a little girl who's been stolen by The Good People - the Faeries of the Shadowlands. During his quest, Tam encounters Mary Queen of Scots, James Hepburn and Queen Elizabeth, and other historical figures. To get a preview of the book and illustrations at Scotty's MySpace site: _www.myspace.com/tamohare_ (http://www.myspace.com/tamohare) 3. The TCSC will reschedule for a date in the autumn when we'll all be looking to get back into the swing of things. I just got back from Scotland where there was unseasonably good weather - perhaps only 2 days of rain in the three weeks we were there. The daffodils were up and the crocus and tulips were in full bloom. And a double blessing to come home to such nice weather. We missed the snow by a day!
