From BabsFayth at aol.com Wed Jun 20 16:54:26 2007 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 16:54:26 EDT Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish American Center Launches Funding Appeal Message-ID: Hello Everyone, Do you believe in what the Scottish American Center stands for? Can you sacrifice one dinner out during the next year to support something you believe in and that our Scottish-American community truly needs? How many times have you spent $25 and don?t even remember how or why, and got nothing of any real value for it? Well, this is your chance to make a very small amount of money do something very important to all of us? Here?s an amazing fact: if just 100 of you contributes only $25 to the SAC right now, we will have the budget we need to pay the rent, utilities, and phone for the entire upcoming year! We have negotiated an incredibly inexpensive commercial space in which to get started (and stay as long as we need to) - so the physical overhead for the Scottish American Center is very affordable for our Scottish community. Why are we trying to raise a year?s budget at this time? Because financing the year ahead in this way will allow us the time we need to finish up our incorporation process and establish our charitable status with the IRS. Once we have finished those tasks, we will then be legally allowed to get our ? fund-raising machine? in motion- and we will be able to seek grants and sponsors, and develop major donors outside of our Scottish community- as well as developing Scottish American Center-supporting income streams. In turn, we will grow the SAC itself and then? Our goal is to develop a Scottish American Center that will not only serve to educate and grow our organizations? memberships, but ultimately- to give financial support back to our Scottish community, rather than the other way around. But in the beginning, the SAC needs your investment to become what it can be for all of us. As readers, subscribers to Scottish News in Minnesota (The SNIM) I hope you have been aware of articles that have been appearing in this publication for the last five months or so featuring the Scottish American Center. Assuming that you have, you know that Scott McKechnie, a hard working member of our community, initiated the establishment of the SAC last July, opened to the public in mid-February, and held a Gala Grand Opening on Tartan Day, April 6 and 7. Up to this point, the financial support of the SAC has pretty much been on Scott's nickel with a little help in more recent months from the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans, the St. Andrews Society of Minnesota, and a limited number of individual contributions. The time has come to reach out to the greater Scottish community for help to temporarily fund this outstanding and important contribution that benefits us all. The time has come to ask for your help. We need you to keep the SAC moving forward. We need 100 of you who are reading this special edition of the SNIM right now to come forward and make a contribution of $25. We have set August 1, 2007 as our target date for achieving that goal - $2,500. Help us do that. Make a decision to donate $25 (or more) right now. There are two ways you can send us your contribution: 1.) If you would like to have a tax-deductible receipt, make your checks payable to St. Andrew's Society of MN and mail to St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota, P.O. Box 24888, Edina MN 55424-0888. Once received you will be sent a receipt. St. Andrew's will then send the SAC a check in the amount of your contribution. 2.) If a tax deductible receipt is not important to you right now, simply make your checks payable to J. Scott McKechnie and mail to: Scottish American Center, 151 Silver Lake Road NW, Suite 13, New Brighton MN 55112. Scott will still send you a receipt for your contribution, and we expect that it will be tax deductible by the end of the year. You are always welcome at the Scottish American Center. We are now open most evenings Monday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. ? 8:00 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays noon to 6:00 p.m. and now on Saturdays, noon to 3:00 p.m. Come on up and see us. You'll be glad you did. Visit the web site at _www.scottishamericancenter.org_ (http://www.scottishamericancenter.org) 42 days until August 1 and counting! Original URL: _http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/com/347681461.html_ (http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/com/347681461.html) Electric Scotland Our Scottish American Center (_www.scottishamericancenter.org_ (http://www.scottishamericancenter.org) ) has been added to Electric Scotland's links and search engine. Electric Scotland is a huge website full of tons of info about almost anything Scottish, and if you have not visited this website, you should. You can spend endless delightful hours there researching whatever you are looking for connected to your heritage. Electric Scotland's link = _www.electricscotland.com_ (http://www.electricscotland.com) . The search engine link is on many pages of Electric Scotland's, website, and is _www.scotsearch.org_ (http://www.scotsearch.org) , specifically. Our website is listed within the "Society and Culture" category on the main Scotsearch page, within the "Organizations and Societies" subheading. (These are found not in the grid at the top of the page, but in the categories below on the Scotsearch page itself.) Alternatively, (and more easily) just use the search engine to type in "Scottish American" or "MN", and it will be found among the listings. At this time, the word "Minnesota" does not work, but Electric Scotland has been contacted to see if we can add that keyword. SO HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP: Visit Electric Scotland and then use our link to pull up our Scottish American Center website. This will create "hits" and begin to raise our visibility in the search engine. Also, give us a positive vote, as this too, will improve our awareness level. While you're visiting Electric Scotland, look around, it's a great website. Also, I would like to point out that Electric Scotland donated a couple of very nice Clan Territory maps to the SAC for our display. Oh, by the way, to vote positively for the Scottish American Center website at _www.electricscotland.com_ (http://www.electricscotland.com) - after you've found the link, click on "rate it" found at the bottom of the paragraph describing the SAC. Also, don't forget to actually click on the link, so that it registers as "a hit". Founding Donors of the Scottish American Center There will never been another opportunity for you to become a Founding Donor of the Scottish American Center. The first year is always the biggest financial challenge until fund-raising and grant writing are in motion. Please consider making a donation to turn our Scottish American home in Minnesota and the Midwest into a highly effective and increasingly attractive facility we can all be proud of. Don't wait for others to make this critically important and fundamental new beginning for our community succeed. Only first year donors will be able to claim the title and honor of "Founding Donor!" Make your donation now, and the Scottish American Center will list your name in perpetuity as a Founding Donor for all future descendents and all visitors to see. Please call the center at 651-636-1558, or email Scott at _j.s.mck at prodigy.net_ (mailto:j.s.mck at prodigy.net) and we will happily send you a Founding Donor form. The Founding Donor form explains the benefits of the donor levels and explains the need to contribute through St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota until such time as our legal and financial papers are filed. No gift is too small ? from $1 to $1,000 or more. The Scottish American Center is located on the lower level (follow the signs) of the 151 office building. The address is 151 Silver Lake Road NW, Suite 13, New Brighton, MN 55112 - just 4 long blocks south of the intersection of I-694 and Silver Lake Road on the east side. The Center phone number is 651-636-1558 and there is voice mail. YOU are at the center of the SAC's success. Be Proud! You will have helped build a future heritage for our community, our descendents, and for the citizens of Minnesota and the Midwest. 2. Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games ? Oooops! ! ! Chalk it up to the aging process, trying to keep too many balls in the air, or just plain empty headedness, but of all the people we forgot to thank in last months issue, heavenly days, McGee, we forgot the wonderful Pastor Pari Bailey who offered a beautiful invocation and who stepped up with very little warning to give a grateful benediction. All this while piping with the Minnesota Police Pipe Band. Thank you Pari, you were wonderful. TARTAN DAY BUTTON COLLECTORS: The 2008 ? 10 year anniversary Tartan Buttons are available on line at _www.tartandaybuttons.org_ (http://www.tartandaybuttons.org) Minnesota's own Jack A. Barker has been designing the National Authorized Tartan Day Button since 2001. We will next have them for sale locally at the Scottish Ramble in February. Babs almost always has a few stashed in her purse, so if you are looking to pick up a couple, and you happen to see her, ask. Chances are you will score a button. 3. Scotty Roberts Rollicky Book, Rollicks ON! The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare - by Scotty Roberts Thank you to everyone who bought a copy of my book at this year's Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games. Or simply call me at (651) 493-9738, or e-mail me at _scotty at taverntent.com_ (mailto:scotty at taverntent.com) . Thaks again, and Cheers ~Scotty Roberts 4. Twin Cities Metro Pipe Band News The Twin Cities Metro Pipe Band attended the Alma Highland Games on the weekend of May 26th and and 27th and took a 7th place on the first day and an 8th on the second day. Overall the weather was cold and wet, the competition was very stiff with 14 bands in attendance and we were not in good form. After a first place finish at the Mini bands contest held in Chicago the month before this was a bit of a disappointment. The following weekend, June 2, the band attended the Milwaukee games and took our first full band win against 8 other bands on a warm sunny afternoon. This last weekend, June 16th, saw the band at the Chicago Highland games with swarms of Cicadas clinging to pipes and drum while we competed in 95 degree weather against 10 other bands. The band tied for second with the formidable Minnesota Police PB but ended up with a 3rd place finish due to ensemble preference. We have several parades coming up in June and July including the Oakdale parade, the Columbia Heights parade, the Forest Lake 4th of July parade, the Lakeville parade, and the Crystal parade. In August we will be traveling to the Davenport Highland Games and in October we will be attending the St. Louis Highland Games. News from Royal Scottish Country Dance Society - Twin Cities Branch >From the RSCDS ? Barbara Cameron Thanks for the welcome to my new Board Chair position with RSCDS. RSCDS doesn't have any great events in July, just twice weekly rehearsals of our new annual repertoire that is initially rolled-out at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. But, we can save the topic of our performances for the August SNIM. We'll update you at the end of July. 14. Are you a Law Breaker??? This story has circled the globe in the last few days. I received the news from my good friend, Col. Ray Erwin, USMC ret who had received it from a fellow Clan Irwin in Australia. Then, luckily, who else but himself, Bill Watkins has sent me the link to what is probably the original story from the BBC news in the UK. Here it is then; better read it, lads. Don't want to be fined 5,000 pounds (that's about 10 grand in USD) or spend 6 months in a Scottish slammer cuz ya kinna prove the origin of yer sporran. _http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/6234290.stm_ (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/6234290.stm) 15. Merlin's Rest update: Merlin's Rest Pub is now up and running and we are looking to having our old friends join us for the craic. Here's the website: _www.merlinsrest.com_ (http://www.merlinsrest.com) We can report that the May pub night was so well received that St. Andrew's repeated there in June and it was another great evening at "Merlins." All the lads were in fine forms; lots of SAS lads there en kilt. More menu selections now being offered ? including hamburgers, fish and chips, etc., as well as the now famous Guiness stew; reports on the taste were very favorable. John McCormick still holding court in a corner of the bar room with more instruments than I can remember but included accordion, fiddles, mandolins, flutes, and what have you, adding to the cheerful ambience. It was a little hot to sit at the tables outside but still a good place get away from the music and conversation for a wee bit for more intimate chats if that was your wont. Congratulations to Bill, John, Dick and all for making this happen. Stop by ? "where everybody knows your name." Cheers! 16. Famous Isle changes its name. Aye have ye not heard the news? New web site for Conference of Celtic Women This from Jean Bills CONFERENCE 2007 UPDATE, JUNE There is actually quite a bit of news to share in this update of the 2007 Conference of Celtic Women, coming along on October 4-6. Just to make sure that you have all necessary information, at the bottom of this message you will find a copy of the conference registration form. ?? This conference will offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity that you won?t want to miss. There won?t be another like it. I am speaking of the appearance of SHEILA STEWART from Blairgowrie, Scotland. What is so special, you may ask? Sheila represents a dying culture of the traveler tradition, of music and storytelling and a way of life that will soon be gone entirely. She was a member of the famous ?Stewarts of Blair? family. Her father Alex, a brilliant bagpiper, and mother Belle along with her sister, the whole family musically rich and acknowledged as leaders of the tradition. Both Sheila and Belle have received honors from the Queen of England, with the British Empire Medal to Belle, and Member of the British Empire to Sheila for their continuing efforts to preserve the traveler tradition. At the time of the U.S. celebration of our bi-centennial in 1976, President Ford invited Sheila Stewart to entertain thousands in Washington D.C. to honor the Scottish travelers and their heritage. She has also lectured on the subject at Princeton and Harvard Universities, and entertained over 385,000 in Glasgow before the Pope. With the other members of her family now deceased, Sheila is the last carrier of this tradition, and she will honor us with her presence at our Conference of Celtic Women in Milwaukee. Sheila has often said, when she is gone, the memories and history and folklore of the travelers will be buried with her. Please do not miss this chance to see a legend of Scotland while you may, because it will be your only chance. To honor Sheila?s visit we are planning special events, one of which will be a PRE-CONFERENCE BONFIRE, limited to 25 persons for an up-close and personal time with Sheila while she tells of her life and traveler stories and sings the folksongs from Blairgowrie. This will take place at a rural setting in New Berlin (close to Milwaukee), along with a wonderful outdoor meal, a bagpiper to add authenticity to the evening, and a signed copy of Sheila Stewart?s book ?Queen Amang the Heather.? This is a fund-raiser for the conference and for Sheila, the cost being $100 per person. Since 25 is a rather small number (fitting around the fire) send your check for the bonfire, made payable to the conference, as soon as possible. ?? The next wonderful piece of news is the addition of FIONA MOLLOY to the conference line-up. Fiona is a native of Derry and Donegal in Northern Ireland, now making her home in Wisconsin. We are so fortunate to have such a talent for the conference. Fiona?s voice is beyond beautiful, strong, and touching and what a wonderful entertainer she is. Her repertoire is more than Irish, folk, country, Celtic and American. You may have heard her at recent Milwaukee Irish Fests, singing in large tents filled to over-flowing audiences. What a treat!! The Friday. October 5th conference concert, now a tradition for Celtic Women, will feature a bill of FIONA MOLLOY and SHEILA STEWART. This evening concert at the ICHC is part of the conference package. If you are a conference registrant, the concert is free of charge. But the concert is also open to the public with tickets available at the door for a cost of $15 per person. In addition to the Friday evening concert, Fiona Molloy will serve as MC for the conference and have a program spot during the day on Friday. If you are a Fiona Fan, now is your chance to see and hear a lot of her great Irish voice. The conference web site is full of conference information. _www.conferenceofcelticwomen.org_ (http://www.conferenceofcelticwomen.org/) For an individual brochure to be sent to you, please respond to this e-mail or call 414-257-3770 days. REGISTRATION FORM 2007 can be found on the web site: _http://www.ConferenceOfCelticWomen.org_ (http://www.conferenceofcelticwomen.org/) AND IN CLOSING My sincere thanks to my good friends and fellow members of the DSHA who together with the curators hosted such a lovely reception at the Karpeles Museum in Duluth on June 2. It was so wonderful, attended by many of my Denfeld classmates, my daughter SaDee and friends as well as DSHA members. Thanks to Steve and Barbara Reyelts, Laura Jacobs, Heidi Lyle, David Bouschor, and the DSHA board and my friends at the Karpeles, Lee and Karen Fadden. And not to forget my "almost" brother, Jim Harris whose glowing introduction proved that even old broads can blush.
