From BabsFayth at aol.com Mon Oct 1 13:35:44 2007 From: BabsFayth at aol.com (BabsFayth at aol.com) Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2007 13:35:44 EDT Subject: [Scottish News] Scottish News in Minnesota, Vol. 7, No. 73, October 1, 2007 Message-ID: Hello Everyone, And so begins our seventh year. Holey Moley, Rocky. Do you believe it? 73 issues and that doesn?t count those first years when we published two issues a month. YIKES! We are nearing 1,000 subscribers, and that, my friends, is significant. Thanks to all of you, our faithful readers. You?ve had made the ? SNIM? the success it is. What an absolutely wonderful month we have had. The lovely, luscious, Afternoon Tea presented by TCSC Saturday, September 22, was as elegant and enjoyable an event as we have had in our neighborhood in some time. Well done to Florence Schmitz, Lindsay Le and all the ladies of TCSC (and gents ? yes, we saw Herb Schmitz and Johan Hart lending a hand.) A week earlier, we traveled to our far north neighborhood for a poignant Remembrance Day at Forest Hills Cemetery in Duluth followed by a beautiful tea in the home of David and Gloria Bouschor. Any opportunity to hear Heidi Lyle sing ?Flower of Scotland? is worth the trip. A somewhat more rollicking time was had on Friday night, September 21, at Keegan?s as the SAS faithful gathered for Pub Night. What great times these are. (A friend and I did a trial run the week before ? it was fun, good company. Don?t ask.) One left, info below, this time at Merlin?s on a Sunday afternoon. Don?t miss a chance to join this warm, friendly, welcoming gang. Lots of folks and new faces at the Mac Pipe Band concert on Saturday, the 15th. Not so many familiar faces ? Angie MacSchwartz and me. And Judith Palmateer tells me the house was packed at RSCDS ?Bring a Friend Night.? WOW! Check out all the great stuff coming up and get it on your calendar TODAY! In an effort to abate some confusion about our format, we are adding, with this issue, a Table of Contents. You are not reading the same items over and over, first you read the title in the Table of Contents, then you scroll down, down, down for the details. Voila: TABLE OF CONTENTS A. ANNOUNCEMENTS ? Details 1. National Do Not Call List is Expiring Effective September 15, 2007 The National No Call Registry in use by telemarketers will again be available to them. The current registry, now five years old will have expired. In order to continue your No Call status you must re-register as soon as possible or again be a victim of their constant harassment. It is relatively simple, Call toll free: 1-888-382-1222 and follow simple instructions, it will only take about one minute to complete. They request that you call from the phone number that you want omitted. They will also give you info on omitting your number by going to their web site. It is much faster calling! This will continue your no call status for five more years. I do not know if cell phone numbers are included in this program! 2. Minnesota Tartan fabric purchase opportunity Liz Michaelson tells us that an opportunity to purchase fabric in the Minnesota Tartan may be available if enough people are interested. Projected cost per yard is $50. The vendor is asking for enough interest to guarantee selling 100 yards. If you are interested, contact the Osweilers at _MNGuthrie at juno.com_ (mailto:MNGuthrie at juno.com) 3. The SNIM is NOT SPAM! Some of the mysteries of the internet and cyberspace will never be understood by we mere mortals. Certainly one of the most puzzling is: Why does the SNIM turn up in your email box as SPAM? I can't answer that and some of the best Geek minds in the community can't answer that either. Just be sure you have our addresses ? _babsfayth at aol.com_ (mailto:babsfayth at aol.com) , _info at tartandaymn.org_ (mailto:info at tartandaymn.org) and _news at tartandaymn.org_ (mailto:news at tartandaymn.org) in you address books and maybe we will pass through the SPAM filter unscathed. I realize that sometimes it leaves the mail service with the foreboding ***SPAM*** designator out in front of Scottish News in Minnesota subjct. If you have been wondering why you don't get the SNIM anymore, check your SPAM folder. You might find us waiting for you there. Help us get the SNIM into your mailbox each both. Please notify us when you get a new email address. It is helpful to have both your NEW address and your OLD address. Be sure all of our addresses are in your address book to help keep the SNIM out of the SPAM folder. 4. TARTAN DAY BUTTON COLLECTORS Take note The 2008 ? 10 year anniversary Tartan Buttons are available on line at _www.tartandaybuttons.org_ (http://www.tartandaybuttons.org) Minnesota's own Jack A. Barker has been designing the National Authorized Tartan Day Button since 2001. We will next have them for sale locally at the Scottish Ramble in February. Babs almost always has a few stashed in her purse, so if you are looking to pick up a couple, and you happen to see her, ask. Chances are you will score a button. 5. Scotland on TV Check out this new site. Some wonderful video of things going on in Scotland ? Thank you Myth Julie. _http://www.scotlandontv.tv/scotlandontv/culture.html_ (http://www.scotlandontv.tv/scotlandontv/culture.html) 6. NEWS - DETAILS 1. Flowers of the Forest ? Bernadette Galaba Bernadette was a wee Irish Lass who endeared herself to the Scottish Community with her enthusiasm for our culture and heritage. I remember well her enthusiasm when she was ?finally? able to have a Scottish vendor tent in the International Bazaar at the MN State Fair. You will probably remember her best from A Scottish Ramble and her booth filled with the beautiful embroideries. We will sincerely miss her. Born in Ireland on February 8th, 1940, she lived in the small town of Glenamaddy, County Galway. She arrived in Connecticut at the age of 24, where she met and married John Galaba. They later moved to Minnesota where she began a successful embroidery business. She was deeply involved in the local Irish community. She is survived by husband John, and children Noreen, Kevin and Daniel. A memorial celebration was held at the Dubliner Pub in Saint Paul on Wed. September 12th. Published in the Pioneer Press on 9/16/2007. 2. Steve Kincaid Health Update Steve Kincaid and his bride and sidekick, Liz, were at the SAS pub night on Friday night the 21st and the dear lad looked pretty darn good. He is excited about being able to drive his car again soon, but is limiting his bike riding to the stationary bike at his house. He?s lost a goodly amount of weight, enviable, but not the way he lost it. We are all thankful that Steve has survived an event that might not have had such a happy outcome. Welcome Back, Steve. 3. As a matter of fact, as we celebrate the six month anniversary of our opening on April 6, I am guessing that our valiant crew of Charter Guest Hosts would love some relief. Guest Hosting at the Scottish American Center is a great opportunity to not only serve the Scottish Community but to plunge into the great books, videos, DVDs, and CDs that have been collected. As a Guest Host, all of this great material is at your fingertips. How about calling Babs Humphrey at 612-869-7163 or email _babsfayth at aol.com_ (mailto:babsfayth at aol.com) and offer to spend one evening (or more) or one Saturday afternoon a month at the Scottish American Center? You will be so glad you did, and so will we. >From Scott McKechnie, Executive Director: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! All of us working with the SAC want to express our profound gratitude to all of YOU that responded to our summer fund drive. You may remember that our goal was to raise $2500 for a year?s rent and phone to allow us some breathing time to get our essential establishment work done. Well, I?m so pleased to tell you that we met that goal and exceeded it! It?s a good thing, too, because as I?m sure you all know, there is much more to making the SAC happen than rent and phone- we very much needed the extra bit to do all the other stuff that needs doing to create and grow the Scottish American Center, and it is a great relief to those individuals who have been heavily raiding their bank accounts that your support has been forthcoming! Tapadh leibh from the heart, for sure and for real, folks. A note about donations that have been made thus far through the St. Andrews Society: Many of you may notice that your checks haven?t yet cleared. Many apologies for that, but due to a prolonged illness in the SAS organization, the treasury was on hold for a while. Things are getting back on track now, so your checks should clear very soon. Many thanks for your patience, your kindness has not been forgotten. What?s that you say? YOU haven?t yet become one of the founding donors of the Scottish American Center. This fleeting chance to write your name down in Scottish-American history is going fast? but is not yet gone! However, it won? t be long before it?s too late- our one-year anniversary is not that far off. Please donate today- Don?t stand by while the others in your community create the future. Write your check to: St. Andrews Society of MN, and put ?for SAC? in the memo, then send to the Scottish American Center at the address below. Thanks for your investment in our heritage! SAC NEWS: A whole lot has been going on, more than can be fairly reported in one issue of the SNIM- More volunteers, more donations of books and display items keep coming in, we continue to accumulate links on other major Scottish websites, we?re officially incorporated, and behind-the-scenes plans are in motion. Please stop by and check things out, but in the meantime, since our new webmaster Don Luther has joined the cause, check out our recently updated website. Now that somebody that knows what they?re doing is helping us, our site will begin to develop at increased pace. The Scottish American Center is located on the lower level (follow the signs) of the 151 office building. The address is 151 Silver Lake Road NW, Suite 13, New Brighton, MN 55112 - just 4 long blocks south of the intersection of I-694 and Silver Lake Road on the east side. The Center phone number is 651-636-1558 and there is voice mail. _www.scottishamericancenter.org_ (http://www.scottishamericancenter.org) - email: _sacandhr at prodigy.net_ (mailto:sacandhr at prodigy.net) YOU are at the center of the SAC's success. Be Proud! You will have helped build a future heritage for our community, our descendents, and for the citizens of Minnesota and the Midwest. BTW, those of you who subscribe to The Highlander must have seen the great article and photograph from the MN Scottish Fair in the recent issue (page 56, Sept/Oct 2007). Thanks to Editor Neill Ray, who wrote, ?It came in with the MN Scottish Fair photo on the Highlander Scene pages and we just thought it was a great story and a great looking bunch of Scots. Both photos were sent in by Betsy & Gary Merrill. The Center is a wonderful project and I'm delighted to give it more visibility in the Scottish community.? Moran Taing to Neill and the entire staff of The Highlander and special thanks to Betsy & Gary Merrill for the cool photos. 4. News from A Scottish Ramble Clan, organizations & vendor info for A Scottish Ramble 2008 have been mailed. Please note that the deadlines are earlier this year than in the past due to new historical exhibits at Landmark Center that use spaces Scottish Ramble has used in the past. Many of you may remember the Scottish Snow Angel on the 2007 Scottish Ramble postcards and buttons - we are looking for a new "cool kilt" photo to use for 2008. Winning photographer will receive photo credit, acknowledgment in the program and 4 free passes to A Scottish Ramble 2008. Submit your Kilt in the Snow Photo to _peggy at uncommongatherings.com_ (mailto:peggy at uncommongatherings.com) by Friday, October 19. Nothing's Cooler than Kilts in February! 5. News from Clan MacKinnon Clan MacKinnon received the trophy for First place in the Quad cities games at the end of August. They were shocked but happy. Also, their national Clan MacKinnon gave Summer Getty, the daughter of MN Clan members Heather and Mark Getty, a first ever scholarship of $250 to pursue her Scottish dancing endeavor. We had a potluck recently and presented her with the check. Wow! that was fun. Summer traveled to Scotland this past summer with other MSCDA dancers to take part in competitions over there. In other Clan MacKinnon news, the wife of MN Commissioner Jack MacKinnon, Barbara MacKinnon, award-winning author, has a fantastic new web site. Check it out. _http://www.barbaramackinnon.com/index.htm_ (http://www.barbaramackinnon.com/index.htm) Awarding her the 2007 Eric Hoffer Award, the reviewer said, "MacKinnon crafts a fast-paced plot...The local people, the magnificently described country scenery, and these two special people sweep the reader along..." About the sequel to ?Where Rivers Meet,? titled ?Ring of Trees,? Barbara says, ?My sequel to "Rivers" is in its infancy right now. This plot's rather scary!? If you haven?t read Barbara?s romantic first novel, you can order it from her web site. Looking ahead to December, it?s a perfect gift for the Scot, romantic or not, on your list. 6. News from Macalester College Pipe Band - A Review The Macalester College Pipe Band never disappoints and their concert on Saturday, September 15 was no exception. This is a finely tuned ? no pun intended ? crisp, well disciplined pipe band that knows how to make the music soar. And the drum corps ain?t so shabby either. Under the leadership of Drum Sergeant Steve Sutherland, they make you sit up and listen. Solos by Andrew Lewis and Michael Koch were outstanding. Andrew is a 21-year-old PhD candidate from somewhere back east and we are so lucky to have him here. And do you ever tire of listening to Mike Koch, he of the fastest fingers in the Midwest, WOW! One of my special pipers Bob Lies and I were musing afterwards about the house not being packed, as it was a free concert. That is a good question. Those who were there, including Angie and myself, loved every minute of it. Thanks to you all, the pipers, drummers, dancers (all those Schmitz girls), and to Mike Breidenbach for a pipe band we can all point to with pride. (If I hadn?t misplaced my program I could list all the awards they have won this season. Stay tuned, maybe Mike will send me an email with the info.) For questions email: _pipeband at macalester.edu_ (mailto:pipeband at macalester.edu) 13. Merlin's Rest update: So, you?ve been wanting to stop by, check out Merlin?s Rest, find out for yourself if everything you?ve heard was true, but. . . ? What? Shy, Scared, Nervous? Well the St. Andrew?s Family Pub Day on October 7 (see details above under News from SAS) will provide the perfect opportunity to come on over and see for yourself. Himself, Bill Watkins, will be there, no doubt, regaling the crowd with tales of questionable veracity; maybe John Dingle will favor us with a rendering of ?We?ll Keep a Welcome.? Bring Kleenex. Here's the website: www.merlinsrest.com Stop by ? "where everybody knows your name." Cheers! FYI New email address for Bill: _wbillwatkins at msn.com_ (mailto:wbillwatkins at msn.com) AND IN CLOSING This issue has been a real labor of love. My ?A? computer went toes up about 3 weeks ago, and so I was forced to produce this issue ? from scratch - on a dark ages computer that we keep hidden away in the basement. Ach! My son will bring me a ?newer? computer from Chicago this coming weekend (he is installing it as we speak! Woo Hoo), so I expect there will be much rejoicing in the lands. How and at what point did we become so dependent on this collection of high tech junk? If you have coming events, news, or announcements you would like included in future issues, please send the information to us (babsfayth at aol.com) and we will publish in the next issue. Our deadline for the first of the month issue is the 27th of the previous month. Please let us know if you would like to be included in the reminder email that we send on the 20th of the month. Indeed it is. Here at the bustling offices of the SNIM we try to be responsive to our readers. When somebody says, ?Could you try another font, something easier to read when it?s printed?? we respond ? ?Of Course!? So there you are. That?s what?s different, a new ? or rather very old, tried and true ? font. Let me know if it reads easier. As we approach the witches and hobgoblins day, don?t forget the biggest hobgoblin of them all, Guy Fawkes. Details about the gathering at Andy and Cheri McCracken?s on November 3 can be found under coming events. A great time and well worth the little drive up north. An Editorial: Sadly these words will not reach the ears or eyes of those most affected. Since their purchase by Time Warner (Road Runner) but keeping the name Comcast, dozens of our subscribers for whom Comcast is their ISP have not been receiving the SNIM. We can only assume that Comcast designates the issues that come from our mail service as SPAM and they are summarily dispatched to SPAM Never ? Never Land. If you are a Comcast subscriber, and you are reading this, you are probably reading it online at www.tartandaymn.org. We would urge you to contact someone a step above the phone answering Customer Service Representative and ask to have that restriction removed. While I am a customer of Comcast, I get my email through AOL/Outlook and thereby have not lost mail. The SNIM is published every month on or before the first, faithfully. We are non-commercial. Our goal, our mission statement if you will, is to provide information about events and news occurring in our community. We do occasionally promote enterprises like books written by members of our community, soft goods sold by vendors who are members of our community, and events of interest sponsored by groups outside our community that may charge admission. The SNIM is free to all and will stay that way. Help us if you can. Contact Comcast and ask them to remove the SPAM designation imposed on the SNIM. I have sent an appeal to abuse at comcast.net at the suggestion of Tech Support. The reply I got is a form letter and very discouraging. I don?t expect to hear from them again and I don?t expect the problem to be fixed. Then there is another idea: you can set up a FREE Yahoo account, Hot Mail account or a GMail account, all at no charge for the sole purpose of receiving your issues of the SNIM. Just let me know if there is a new email address and I will make the switch. * * A very special welcome to those who have visited the Scottish American Center since its opening and are receiving their very first issue of the SNIM! Hope you like it and find it useful. In an effort to abate some confusion about our format, we are adding, a Table of Contents. Some of the mysteries of the internet and cyberspace will never be understood by we mere mortals. Certainly one of the most puzzling is: Why does the SNIM turn up in your email box as SPAM? I can't answer that and some of the best Geek minds in the community can't answer that either. Just be sure you have our addresses ? babsfayth at aol.com , info at tartandaymn.org and news at tartandaymn.org in you address books and maybe we will pass through the SPAM filter unscathed. 3. Petrol prices hit ?1 per liter in the UK Those readers of the SNIM who also receive daily news updates from Scotsman.com may have been as stunned as this editor to read recently that the price of petrol is expected at ?1 per liter imminently. For the full impact of this price jump, you must understand that 4 liters equals 1 imperial gallon A British imperial capacity measure equal to 4 quarts or 4.545 liters. Converting that to dollars at the pump, our Scottish cousins are paying (at today?s conversion rate of 1 British pound = 2.0523 U.S. dollars) approximately $9.32 a US gallon. So as we brace ourselves for the 60 ? 70 cent hike per gallon at our pumps the record near $92 a barrel oil price is expect to bring to this country, we may take a moment from our P & Ming to commiserate just a wee bit with our Scottish cousins across the sea. Caveat: no math geniuses live here, so my figures may be just a dime, nickel, or pence off, but you get the picture. 6. News from the 42nd Highland Regiment Great News from Bill Lochen The news I have from the 42nd is that I have been asked to command the Highland Battalion at the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Ft. Carrilon (now Fort Ticonderoga) in upstate New York. Our local company of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment reenactors will be participating as well. During the French and Indian War (1755-1763) the 42nd Regiment, The Highlanders, participated in an ill-fated attack against the French forces at the heights at Ticonderoga. Though decimated during the attack the Highlanders fought with great ferocity and bravery drawing tremendous acclaim from not only the British commanders, but the French as well. This battle is one of the cornerstones of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment's glorious history and we are thrilled to participate. Editor?s Note: Congratulation to the 42nd and their commander, Bill Lochen. You make us proud! 19. I believe I have been double-subscribed to the SNIM, and you don't need to be paying for bandwidth to pass out unnecessary copies of the SNIM. The e-mail addresses I believe are registered are: jlf at warped.com JohnLFairbairn at Sprintmail.Com If you would be so kind, would you pick one or the other and delete the remaining one? I am getting two copies of this and it is not necessary. Thanks, my Lady - John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
